Chelsea have completed their seventh summer signing with the arrival of Kai Havertz, who has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Blues.

Chelsea have made an official statement to confirm that they have secured the services of Kai Havertz. The German international, who becomes the seventh player to arrive at Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window, has signed a five-year contract after completing his move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Havertz joined Bayer Leverkusen as an 11-year-old in 2010 and rapidly progressed through the ranks before making grade in the first-team setup in 2016. In the four years since, the youngster has progressed leaps and bounds to become an indispensable figure for Die Werkself.

Despite still being in the early stages of his career, Havertz amassed well over 100 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, impressing with his creative ability and eye for goal. However, his progress also meant that the who’s who of European football were interested in him. Among them, Chelsea were hot on the 21-year-old’s trails in recent months.

Chelsea’s interest in Havertz was reciprocated by the player himself, who had reportedly been keen to make the switch to Stamford Bridge this summer. The German midfielder’s desire to complete a summer transfer boosted the Blues’ position and negotiations were seemingly smooth, even if long drawn out to some extent.

This week, however, a breakthrough seemed to have been reached, as reports emerged that Chelsea were set to announce his signing ahead of the weekend. That has indeed ended up being true, with Havertz completing his move to Chelsea, becoming the west Londoners’ seventh summer arrival.

And, as was widely reported, the youngster has ended up penning a five-year contract with the Premier League heavyweights. Upon completing his move, Havertz expressed his delight at joining a club like Chelsea.

The 21-year-old said, “I am very happy and proud to be here, For me it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and the trainers. Yeah, I am very happy to be here!”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia seems to have done a fabulous job negotiating the transfer fee too. The reliable Matt Law has claimed that the Blues will pay an initial £62 million plus £8 million in add-ons to Bayer Leverkusen, meaning Havertz is not Chelsea’s record signing. A new phase in his career now beckons Havertz and he will be hoping to make his mark in the blue of Chelsea.
