Ruud Gullit claims Marcus Rashford may be the best “signing” of the summer

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has claimed that Marcus Rashford’s return to Manchester United may be the best signing of the summer.

Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United after his expected departure failed to materialise. Ruud Gullit believes the unexpected situation could lead to the academy graduate being the best “signing” of the summer, following his impressive loan spell at Barcelona.

The England international appeared destined to leave Manchester United and join Barcelona on a permanent basis. However, with the Blaugrana opting to sign Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, Rashford was forced to return to his boyhood club and will now be reintegrated into Michael Carrick’s squad. Dutch football icon Ruud Gullit believes that unexpected return could ultimately work in United’s favour.

Speaking exclusively to Sport Witness, Gullit said, “Marcus Rashford could end up being the best signing.”

The Chelsea icon believes Rashford’s time in Spain helped him rediscover the form and confidence that had appeared to disappear during his final months at Old Trafford.

“He learned a lot at Barcelona and played much better, with far more freedom, than he ever did at Manchester United. Was that his fault, or was it down to the environment at the club? It’s very easy to point fingers at the player.

But if he performs well elsewhere, it suggests something was wrong in his previous environment. So that could prove to be a fantastic move, for Manchester United if he stays, and performs like he did at Barcelona, or for another club who fancies taking a chance on him.”

Rashford’s numbers in Catalonia provide reason for optimism and represent a significant improvement from his final period at Manchester United. The 28-year-old registered 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona last season, becoming an important part of Hansi Flick’s attacking setup.

Does reintegrating Rashford make sense?

This represents a marked contrast to his last 12 months at Old Trafford, where he had fallen out of favour before making his last Premier League appearance for the club in December 2024.

Now, Rashford has another opportunity to change the narrative at Old Trafford. Rather than returning out of favour, he could arrive with renewed confidence and experience from his time in Spain. The test is whether Carrick can create an environment that allows Rashford to reproduce the freedom he enjoyed at Barcelona.

For Manchester United, an in-form Rashford would offer a major attacking addition. The manager seeks someone who can compete with Amad Diallo, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo for a place in the starting XI and the English international can certainly do that.

At his best, the 28-year-old could be one of the first names on their team sheet and can make the left flank his own. He can even support Benjamin Sesko up top when needed. In simple terms, he could solve all their major problems in the final third.
