Manchester United need to pay record fee to sign Lewis Hall

Manchester United will have to fork out in excess of £68 million to sign Newcastle United full-back Lewis Hall this summer.

Newcastle United’s refusal to sell Lewis Hall unless Manchester United break the world left-back transfer record of £68 million is making a deal for their preferred target increasingly difficult with the summer window approaching its final stages.

According to TEAMtalk, Hall remains Manchester United’s top target for the position despite the club continuing to assess several alternatives. The 21-year-old is also understood to be open to a move to Old Trafford, but the Magpies’ determination to keep him has created a major obstacle.

Newcastle’s head coach Matthias Jaissle does not want to lose Hall, and the club have made it clear that the England international is not for sale, a stance so firm that the Red Devils would need to offer more than the current world-record fee before they would seriously consider doing business.

That record stands at £68 million, which Bayern Munich paid Real Madrid for Lucas Hernandez in 2019. Therefore, Manchester United would effectively need to go beyond that figure to have any realistic chance.

The Red Devils are prepared to test Newcastle’s resolve with just over a week of the transfer window remaining, but a bid around £70 million is not currently expected. That makes a deal particularly challenging, though a formal bid remains possible.

Hall has established himself as one of Newcastle United’s most important players over the past three seasons. He has made 102 appearances for the club, contributing three goals and seven assists.

Why do Manchester United need another left-back?

Lewis Hall’s development has also attracted attention from several major clubs, but Manchester United see him as the ideal solution to an important squad problem. Michael Carrick’s side need greater depth at the position for a season that will also include Champions League football.

Luke Shaw remains an experienced option and played every league match last season, but his injury history continues to be a concern. Patrick Dorgu has been used in more advanced positions of late, leaving United seeking another specialist left-back.

Hall offers immediate competition and long-term depth at the position, but the Magpies’ valuation makes the pursuit a major financial gamble. United are therefore continuing to work on alternative targets while keeping Hall at the top of their shortlist. The club have already explored several younger and more affordable options, including Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys and other candidates across Europe.
