Liverpool target Moises Caicedo is Chelsea bound this summer

According to journalist Neil Jones on Twitter, Premier League giants Liverpool have been dealt a blow this summer as Brighton & Hove Albion ace Moises Caicedo is set to join Chelsea.

The 21-year-old is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League and has been a pivotal part of the Seagulls side that qualified for Europe last season. A seasoned player despite his age, Caicedo appears to have played his last game for Brighton and should be on the way out of the Amex soon.

Chelsea have been in talks with the player for a while now and he has already given them his blessings to make a move. The Blues, however, are yet to meet Brighton’s asking price and find the ball in their court at the moment.

The Blues have a midfield revamp on their hands this summer following the exits of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Al Ittihad, Manchester City, Manchester United, and AC Milan respectively. It could get worse should Conor Gallagher also join the quarter in the weeks to come.

Mauricio Pochettino and Co already have one world-class player in their midfield, Enzo Fernandez. Partnering the Argentine star with Caicedo should future-proof the positions for years to come. However, the longer negotiations with Brighton stay in limbo, the more we give other clubs an opportunity to swoop in.

Liverpool were just such a club who were backed to move for Caicedo this summer after news emerged that Fabinho is attracting interest from Al Ittihad. The Brazilian was left out of Liverpool’s pre-season trip to Germany and it would only appear to be a matter of time before his departure is official.

Should that happen, the Reds need another number six and Caicedo fits the ball. Chelsea fans, however, need not worry as Jones believes they already have their man.  While the Reds do want a player who can make an instant impact, Caicedo does not appear to be in their sights.

There is, however, no reason to take Jones’s word as fact. After all, Liverpool play their cards close to their chest at least as far as transfers are concerned. As long as Chelsea closes the deal soon, they will have nothing to worry about. It should prove to be an interesting few weeks heading to the duo’s season opener at Stamford Bridge. Caicedo could very well form a part of the matchday squad and if Jones is to be believed, he will don blue that night.
