Atletico Madrid edge closer to signing Sofyan Amrabat

Sofyan Amrabat, a target for Barcelona and Liverpool, is reportedly closing in on joining Atletico Madrid, who will offer €40 million for him.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Sofyan Amrabat is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. And the 26-year-old is close to moving to Civitas Metropolitano, with Los Rojiblancos offering €40 million for his services. The Fiorentina midfielder is also a target for Barcelona and Liverpool.

Sofyan Amrabat has risen in stature in the last 18 months or so. He first emerged on the radars of top clubs in January 2022 before seeing his stock skyrocket in the following year and a half. In particular, the Moroccan international has become a hot property following his exploits at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But a move has never materialised, with Fiorentina strongly holding on to him.

The 26-year-old has been a regular for Fiorentina for a long time, turning out over 100 times while chipping in with one goal and one assist. But Amrabat’s stint with the Serie A club will likely end this summer amid escalating interest in him. And Barcelona, Liverpool, and Atletico Madrid are keen on securing his services ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Barcelona attempted to sign Amrabat in the January transfer window. But Fiorentina’s valuation priced the Blaugrana out of the chase, although they remain interested in him. And the 26-year-old is the priority summer target for Barcelona following Sergio Busquets’s departure. However, his asking fee might leave them in a spot of bother.

That might not be an issue for Liverpool, who recently approached Amrabat’s entourage over a summer move. The Reds have already bolstered their midfield unit by signing Alexis Mac Allister. But after losing three midfielders as free agents next month, Liverpool must make multiple midfield reinforcements. The Fiorentina midfielder is thus a viable target for the Merseyside club.

But Barcelona and Liverpool are losing the race to sign the Moroccan international, who will likely join Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros have stepped up their efforts to sign the player, offering €40 million to land him. And amid uncertainties surrounding Saul Niguez’s future, Amrabat will be the ideal replacement.

It will be interesting to see if Barcelona and Liverpool can do anything to claw their way back in the battle for Amrabat’s signature. For now, the 26-year-old will likely join Atletico Madrid in a deal worth €40 million.
