David de Gea made another serious mistake that ended up costing Manchester United, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow top-four hopefuls Chelsea.

With both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal losing their fixtures earlier, Manchester United and Chelsea had everything to play for at Old Trafford on Sunday. And the home team made a strong start to the contest, with Juan Mata getting them off the mark against his former club early in the game.

Manchester United had the upper-hand for most of the first half, but on the verge of half-time goalkeeper David de Gea gifted Chelsea a way back into the game. Antonio Rudiger fired a shot from distance, which the Spaniard spilled, allowing Marcos Alonso to pounce on the rebound and level things up.

Manchester United pressed in search of a winner in the second period, but Chelsea, who seemed to be happy to settle for a draw, held firm to take away a point from a tricky fixture against a direct rival. The result means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain three points off of fourth-placed Chelsea and one below Arsenal in fifth, with two games left to be played.

Naturally the Manchester United fans were not happy with the result and took to Twitter to make their feelings known;

David de Gea’s performance drew ire from some supporters, with many calling for Sergio Romero to start the next couple of matches. There were a lot of fans who sympathized with the Spaniard and opined that Solskjaer should keep faith in him.
