Jamie Carragher backs Manchester City for the title after Tottenham setback

Jamie Carragher has backed Manchester City to win the Premier League title despite Liverpool now firmly being in the chase after the weekend’s results.

The Premier League continued to deliver enthralling football and created another major twist over the weekend. Manchester City’s shock loss to Tottenham at the Etihad boosted Liverpool’s chances, with many believing the title race is properly open now.

Liverpool kept up the pressure by winning against Norwich City earlier on Saturday, while Manchester City were expected to collect three points against Spurs a few hours later. However, to the delight of the Merseysiders, Harry Kane starred at the Etihad to score a late winner and help Tottenham secure an improbable victory after they had lost three in a row before the game.

The fixture between the Reds and Manchester City is already billed as a potential title decider, with Liverpool only trailing by six points with a game in hand. The Merseysiders are already tipped to win the title if they can beat Pep Guardiola’s side then. However, there is still a long way to go.

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has now tipped Manchester City to pip their rivals in the title race. The ex-defender spoke to Sky Sports and suggested it would be difficult for the Reds to beat Manchester City at the Etihad while admitting there remains a chance for Jurgen Klopp’s men in the title race.

Carragher said, “I’d still favour Man City with Liverpool still to come to the Etihad, and I think Liverpool’s fixtures may be tougher. I certainly feel for the next four or five days, the Leeds game at Anfield is more important than the cup final on Sunday against Chelsea.”

“There was a little bit of hope that Liverpool could do something, a glimmer of hope when Man City dropped points at Southampton. It was the first time in such a long time that they hadn’t won, and you very rarely see a Pep Guardiola team get pegged back, so I’d still say they are very much in the hot seat.”

“Even a team of Liverpool’s quality coming here to win will not be easy, but the great thing not just for Liverpool supporters but for the country is that it looks like we could have a title race on. Four to six weeks ago we thought that wasn’t going to be the case so long may it continue,” he added.

Manchester City will be aiming to get back to winning ways when they take on Everton next week. Liverpool, meanwhile, will clash against Leeds United and hope to keep the pressure on their rivals.
