Aston Villa confirm decision to keep Emiliano Martinez at the club

Aston Villa director Damian Vidagany has confirmed that Emiliano Martinez will stay at the club this summer, dismissing exit rumours surrounding the Argentine goalkeeper.

Aston Villa suddenly have several pressing issues ahead of them, and they are keen to address them in order to get back on track ahead of the start of the season. Financial issues are also prevalent following UEFA’s substantial fine for breaching the Squad Cost Ratio regulations.

However, they faced a difficult period on Monday this week as Manchester United triggered a release clause in Youri Tielemans’ contract and have since announced him as a new signing. On the same day, PSG reportedly triggered a modest release clause in Lucas Digne’s contract, with the Frenchman set to link up with the Parisians once the World Cup ends.

Emiliano Martinez to stay at Aston Villa?

Martinez has been linked with an exit since the end of the 2024–25 season, with Serie A being mooted as the most likely destination. While he stayed put for the 2025–26 campaign, rumours of an exit have returned for the Argentine international, who remains busy at the World Cup.

However, Aston Villa’s director, Damian Vidagany, made some important comments that appeared on Fabrizio Romano’s post on X. He stated that the club have no desire to sell Martinez and that the goalkeeper will continue into the new campaign.

Vidagany stated, “Martinez will stay with us, we have no intention of letting him leave this summer. The team needs his dedication and extensive experience; it is a very important element in our project for next season.”

The confirmation comes as Aston Villa navigate a challenging period. Financial pressures persist following UEFA’s substantial fine for breaching Squad Cost Ratio regulations, alongside key injuries to Boubacar Kamara and an ACL rupture suffered by Amadou Onana that have depleted the squad’s defensive depth.

On Monday, Manchester United triggered a release clause in Youri Tielemans’ contract and announced him as a new signing. The same day, PSG reportedly triggered a release clause in Lucas Digne’s contract, with the French defender set to join the Parisians.

Martinez has been linked with an exit since the end of the 2024–25 season, with Serie A reported as a potential destination. Juventus were among the clubs credited with interest, though some reports have suggested that a move may be unlikely due to valuation concerns. The statement directly contradicts persistent speculation over a summer departure and reinforces the club’s commitment to retaining their experienced goalkeeper, who is contracted until 2029.
