Enzo Maresca has reportedly agreed to become Manchester City’s next manager as news around Pep Guardiola’s future has gained momentum.
According to TeamTalk, Enzo Maresca is in pole position to become Manchester City’s next manager in the event of Pep Guardiola’s departure. News surrounding the latter’s future has gathered pace over the last few days, which has once again placed the 46-year-old former Chelsea manager in the spotlight as a potential replacement for the Catalan.
Enzo Maresca spent part of his early coaching career as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City. He has since gone on to manage Parma, Leicester City, and most recently, Chelsea, where he was sacked earlier this season.
The entire Chelsea debacle began with reports stating that Maresca had held talks with Manchester City regarding their managerial position. The situation took a different turn shortly after, as the Blues parted company with the 46-year-old. The Italian did hold conversations with Manchester City, and now it appears he is close to taking over.
Pep Guardiola’s future uncertain?
Guardiola has been asked repeatedly about his future over the past few weeks, and his response has consistently been that he will stay. The fact that the Catalan still has a year remaining on his contract at Manchester City does suggest continuity, but multiple credible sources have indicated he could leave at the end of the season.
Maresca is considered the club’s primary target to replace Guardiola should the latter depart. The Italian’s philosophy and familiarity with the club make him a strong contender for the role, and despite links to Napoli, he is reportedly keen on taking over at the Etihad.
Is Maresca a good choice for Manchester City?
Maresca has a good level of Premier League experience from his time at Chelsea, as well as the ability to handle high-pressure situations. Guardiola is expected to have a significant say in the club’s managerial succession, and given their past working relationship, the Italian could well be the chosen candidate.
With several top Premier League sides opting for younger managers—such as Chelsea’s reported interest in Xabi Alonso—Manchester City may view Maresca in a similar light. Overall, the 46-year-old’s playing style and philosophy align well with City’s approach, and everything may ultimately depend on Guardiola’s decision regarding his immediate future at the club.
