Bayer Leverkusen host the uber-rich empire of Paris St. Germain in the Champions League round of 16 first leg in Germany on Tuesday. If this game boasts of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic trying to give the Parisians a first leg advantage, the next is probably sure make mouths water. A mammoth encounter awaits at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, where City welcome La Liga joint leaders Barcelona in their first leg clash. We look at five things to watch out for from these two fixtures:
1) The Battle in the City Goal
Playing the first leg away from home suits teams just fine. And Barcelona must be rubbing their hands in glee at playing the first leg away. Joe Hart has come a long way since his error against Chelsea in the Premier League cost City points and Hart, the number one goalkeeper spot. The England international has since redeemed himself and is back as a first choice in Cityai??i??s goal. Hart should start the game against Barcelona in goal, but a ai???keeper with the stoutest confidence will be extra wary against the Catalans.
Barcelona thrashed Rayo Vallecano for six goals on Saturday in preparation for their game at the Etihad with Lionel Messi going on to surpass the Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano in goals scored in La Liga. With a strike force of Messi, Neymar, Pedro and Alexis Sanchez, Barcelona would expect to grab away goals at the Etihad to shatter the confidence of a resurrected Joe Hart. The England shot stopper would be happy if he could restrict the Catalans to just one away goal, hoping for his attacking teammates to net more than one at the other end.
2) Cityai??i??s Strength vs. Barcaai??i??s Guile
Manchester Cityai??i??s defence can be summarized in one name: Vincent Kompany. The city captainai??i??s performance will decide how confidently City walk into the second leg of their Round of 16 match. Kompany has been the one rock at the back that has battled to keep teams out in the Premier League and had an immense performance for City against Chelsea in the FA Cup at the weekend.
Supporting Kompany in the heart of Cityai??i??s defence would be either Matija Nastasic, who is an able foil to his captain, the oft used Martin Demichelis, who has proved to be a useful acquisition or the forgotten man Joleon Lescott, who certainly put in a memorable shift in the game against Chelsea at the weekend. Whatever the case, City are sure to use the physical aspect of the game ai??i?? their strength and power, to wear Barcelona down. Add Yaya Toureai??i??s raw power to the equation and it suddenly doesnai??i??t look all that easy for Barcelonaai??i??s quick footed, nimble attackers to outwit Cityai??i??s defence.
Kompany will as usual be marshalling and organizing Cityai??i??s defence throughout the game and his performance is sure to give a clue as to who walks out victorious on the night. City will be hoping to sneak a couple of goals in through set pieces where again, their height and power would come in handy. Kompany, Lescott, Demichelis, Javi Garcia, Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko all have excellent aerial abilities and would be key to score goals from set pieces and defend them as well.
Barcelona will look to use their low centre of gravity players who are quick to change pace to outwit their opponents. The Barcelona forward line boasts of enviable attacking talent, but will face difficulties if City opt for a physical approach, much the same way Chelsea has managed to overcome Barcelona a few times in the Champions League in the past.
3) Cityai??i??s Wingers and Stevan Jovetic
We can safely assume Barcelona will hog possession of the ball for long spells trying to move the ball about, twisting and turning in the hopes of finding space between the City midfield and defence. While Yaya Toure and Fernandinho try and put a stop to that, Cityai??i??s best chance of drawing first blood would be on the counter attack. If the ball is won back in the City half, Jesus Navas and Samir Nasri should be looking at every opportunity to make quick runs behind the Barcelona defence and receive the ball quickly.
Taking a leaf out of Real Madridai??i??s book, City manager and former Madrid, Malaga and Villareal boss Manuel Pellegrini must ensure his side gets its counter attacking drills right, because that is the one thing City are most likely to score from, followed as a close second by set pieces. The responsibility lies on Yaya Toure and Fernandinho to break up the Barca play and move the ball to feed Nasri and Navasai??i??s advantageous runs. Kompany himself is good at the playing the ball in front and would look to quickly find the wingers for a swift and lethal counter attack.
This brings us to Stevan Jovetic. With Sergio Aguero missing through injury, Pellegrini must decide whether to recall Alvaro Negredo or continue with the budding partnership of Edin Dzeko and Jovetic. The ex-Fiorentina man scored against Chelsea and should have added to his tally had he been more lucky that day. With Aguero gone, Ai??and Cityai??i??s need for pace in the attack fairly obvious, Pellegrini could go for Jovetic in a starting role, supporting either Negredo or Dzeko. Joveticai??i??s role then becomes very important to use his pace to get on the end of the ball in Cityai??i??s counter attacks and be disciplined enough to receive the knock down from Dzeko or Negredo.
If Kompany puts in a man of the match performance and City sneak a couple of goals through counter attacks, the return leg at the Nou Camp could be the scene of a Barcelona exit from Europeai??i??s elite competition.
4) Zlatan
Ibrahimovic quite simply will carry the Paris St. Germain hopes on his back. The Swede has scored eight times in five games in the Champions League this season and will be looking to terrorize the Leverkusen defence with a performance like this on Tuesday. Ibrahimovicai??i??s genius is in no doubt, but PSG manager Laurent Blanc will be without Edinson Cavani for the trip to Leverkusen.
Nevertheless, Blanc has a wealth of talent at his disposal and will be leading his PSG side as favourites to qualify for the quarter final stage. A lot would thus depend on Zlatan Ibrahimovic. HE has in the past carried the PSG and the Sweden teams single handedly and he now has the chance to prove, in the absence of Cavani, that he has shoulders broad enough to carry his team and show everyone exactly why his arrogance is justified.
5) Leverkusenai??i??s Discipline
Leverkusen sit second in the Bundesliga, 16 points off leaders Bayern Munich and much of this has to do with their awful recent form. Sami Hyypiaai??i??s side were knocked out of the German Cup by second division club FC Kaiserslautern on Wednesday, and on Sunday, they were defeated by Schalke for their fifth defeat in seven matches in the German league.
Sami Hyypiaai??i??s men go into their match against PSG as underdogs and therefore, must make use of whatever few chances come their way. Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno has had an excellent season for Bayer and would be hoping the central defenders in front of him, Omer Toprak and Emir Spahic can rediscover their form from the beginning of the season so that they make it as hard as possible for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paris St. Germain to breach the Leverkusen goal.
Hyypiaai??i??s men must be doggedly defiant and disciplined and would rely on the abilities of Sidney Sam and Heung-Min Son to score on the break with a counter attack. Hyypia, a Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005, conceded that PSG are the favourites but Bayer could well be the better team if they stick to their task with dedication and discipline.
