Manuel Pellegrini has lashed out at Arsene Wenger over his remarks about City‘s transfer business
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has hit back at Arsene Wenger after the Frenchman claimed that the Manchester side tapped up then Arsenal full back Bacary Sagna, long before his contract expired and he was subsequently able to join last season’s league champions for free this summer. Wenger had also made comments about City signing ex- Chelsea player Frank Lampard for six months on a loan deal. Wenger had suggested that City signing Frank Lampard , before he starts with the MLS and Manchester City’s sister club, New York City, was a way of getting round UEFA’s financial fair play rules.
Pellegrini was clearly not pleased with Wenger’s remarks and responded, “I think that as managers we have enough problems with our teams without talking about other teams. The signings of Lampard and Sagna were done correctly.
“We have important restrictions [from UEFA] about the amount of money we can spend and the amount players we can sign.
“We didn’t spend any money in bringing Lampard from New York City to Manchester because he was a ‘free’ player so financial fair play rules do not have any relevance.
“We know exactly what the restrictions of FFP are for us. We have more days [left in the transfer window] to see what is the best for our squad but we will always operate within the rules.”
Lampard joining Manchester City was a strange bit of news Premier League fans had to deal with as the midfielder has been regarded as a Chelsea legend having spent almost all his career with the Blues. Some Chelsea fans were not pleased with this bit of business and lashed out at the ex-England international calling him a ‘traitor’. Lampard’s new boss has come to his defence and he spoke in this regard, “I don’t understand the reaction of Chelsea fans who say he is a traitor because he is no longer Chelsea. The problem was not that Lampard didn’t want to sign another contract with Chelsea it was that Chelsea didn’t want him anymore. He wants to continue playing and he is a good player and very important for our team.”
City have not made too many additions this summer and the capture of Fernando Reges has been the highlight of the window for the English defending champions. The one player who is poised to join the Sky Blues is Porto central defender Eliaquim Mangala and the City are reportedly hoping that the A?32m deal for the defender is completed soon. However, he refused to comment regard any transfer business, adding: “I always say the same answer, when things are finished we can talk about that. All I can say at the moment is that we have more days [before the end of the transfer window] to sort out not only the players who can come to the club but also for those who can go.”
