Liverpool‘s position in the top 4 this season has been due to the strong performances of key players. Here is a look at one of the players who has played a vital role for the Reds’ resurgence, Martin Skrtel.
Most of the managers build their squads from the back and Brendan Rodgers started his second full season for Liverpool by signing as many as three new central defenders in Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. This ensured competition for places at the back and raised doubts about the future of a few central defenders who were deemed surplus to requirements at the start of the season. Martin Ai??krtel was one such player, whose switch from Anfield to Naples looked imminent with his former mentor and manager Rafael Benitez eagerly waiting to acquire his services. Kolo Toure’s injury gave him the chance to play against Manchester United at the start of this season and Ai??krtel hasnai??i??t looked back ever since, making 23 consecutive appearances for Liverpool in the League.
Ai??krtel: From a liability to an asset
Martin Ai??krtel arrived at Liverpool in 2008 with a good reputation and a no nonsense approach to his defending. He has been a regular feature in the Liverpool back line in the past two or three seasons. The Slovakian who was named Liverpool player of the year in 2012 has been progressing well but inconsistencies to his game and horrendous errors which have lead to goals in the last two seasons have set him back. The route out of Anfield seemed the easier option but Ai??krtel, just like Jordan Henderson, chose to stay and has been one of the most impressive players for Brendan Rodgers this season.
Ai??krtel would very much like to take his game to the next level by turning into a ai???world class defenderai??? rather than just being a ai???good defenderai???. He is at the peak of his career and would be hoping to be classified in the Kompany/Terry mould in the next two or three seasons. If his recent performances are anything to go by, Ai??krtel is well on his way to be a mainstay in the Reds’ back-line at least for the next two seasons provided he stays fit.
The most impressive parts about Ai??krtel`s game in these last few months have been hisAi??decision making and tactical awareness. He was guilty of making howlers occasionally in the past two seasons, but has rectified that side of his game and is more careful now. He has struck the perfect balance between hoofing the ball upfront and playing out from the back. The fact that he has been paired with ball playing centre halves like Agger and Sakho takes the pressure of him and gives him that confidence to play with the no nonsense approach he is renowned for. Credit has to be given where it is due and Brendan Rodgers has done a jolly good job of motivating Ai??krtel and making him the back bone of the Reds` back line. Ai??krtel Ai??looks much more assured now and to the relief of most of the Liverpool fans, he has thrown his wrestling and shirt grappling antics out of the window whilst defending set pieces in the penalty area, and has also shown his attacking qualities in the opposition penalty box.
Ai??krtel`s defensive partners
Just like their attacking counterparts, defenders like to hunt in pairs and a solid central defensive partnership is vital for a team to flourish, especially in the Premier League where there are different types of strikers, who will readily pounce on any mistake made by the centre-halves. Ai??krtel has been paired with three different centre halves this season and has done pretty well alongside all of them. After Rodgers` failed experiments with the 3-5-2 formation, Ai??krtel has been part of a traditional back four. Ai??He has partnered Kolo Toure since Sakho`s injury at Chelsea and both of them have looked solid at the back (barring that game against Villa and Kolo Toure`s howler against West Brom). The Slovakian has a much better understanding with Daniel Agger, who should come back into the starting eleven after his injury layoff. It will be interesting to see Rodgers` choice of centre halves when Mamadou Sakho , who has had a stop start season till now, makes a comeback.
One would think that the Ai??krtel-Sakho pairing would do wonders for Liverpool as they are the two best defenders in the club at the moment, both in terms of ability and form. Sakho has all the ingredients of being a world class centre half and it would be a no brainer in pairing Ai??krtel and Sakho. Ai??krtel can mould his game on Sakho`s abilities, which was exactly the case in mid December, where the duo put up impressive displays against Tottenham and Cardiff, until Sakho`s injury broke that promising partnership.
The obvious flaw in Ai??krtel`s game, which is most frustrating to all the Reds supporters is his inconsistency, and his inability to play in a high defensive line. He tends to drop too deep at times, which can be a recipe for disaster when the team is defending a small lead. He looks a world beater in some games but at times his inconsistency during aerial battles against strong,muscular strikers proves to be detrimental. Rodgers would be hoping to fine tune the Slovakian captain’s game even more to get the best out of him to get more clean sheets, which Liverpool have lacked this season.
Ai??krtel’s future at Anfield
Ai??krtel has been a loyal servant at Liverpool for quite some time now and has firmly established himself as a fan favorite at Anfield. Playing in the Champions League once again with Liverpool would be his primary target and having gained the confidence of the manager, the Slovak will be looking to guide Liverpool into the top four this season and maybe try to add the FA Cup to his trophy cabinet, which he so nearly missed out in 2012.
