At the start of the weekend, 3 teams had an equal chance of winning the title, while 9 points separated the bottom 9 in the Premier League table. Status quo remains at the end of Matchday 33 of the Premier League; while Everton comprehensively defeated Arsenal to blow open the race for the Top 4 too.
Everton blow open the race for the Top 4
David Moyes’ tough start to life as Manchester United manager has relegated to the background the work his successor at Everton Roberto Martinez has done with the Toffees. Arsenal visited Goodison Park on a weekend, where Martinez had a chance to match Moyes’ 2012-13 points tally in the league with 6 games to go.
Not many centre forwards standing at 6ft 4in find themselves placed on the right wing when Arsenal come to town. Raw pace and power, however, can scare any defender having to run backwards to his own goal. Given that former Nacho Monreal was the weakest of the four defenders on show at Arsenal, Martinez’s use of the big Belgian centre forward in this fashion worked a peach. Contrast this to Arsenal, who had no Theo Walcott, who could possibly take advantage of a similar deficiency in Sylvain Distin.
As if the title race and the relegation battle was not engaging enough, goals from Steven Naismith, Romelu Lukaku and an own-goal by Mikel Arteta, without reply have now blown open the race for the Top 4. Everton, however, face the tougher run-in, having to host both Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as travel to Southampton; but have a game in hand over the Gunners. Ironically, the Toffees could wind up helping their crosstown rivals claim their first Premier League title.
The bizarre timing of Chris Hughton’s sacking
Chris Hughton has now become the 9th manager to lose his job this season. While Norwich supporters are not entirely unhappy with this decision, the timing of his departure from the club has left even the Canaries faithful shaking their heads in disbelief.
As of the week ending April 7, Norwich City have accumulated 32 points, 5 points ahead of Fulham in 18th. That sort of a lead with 5 games to go is usually a boost for survival, but Gus Poyet’s Sunderland having 3 games in hand makes things uncomfortable for the Canaries.
The visit to Fulham is probably the biggest of the 5 games remaining for Norwich City, given that they visit both Manchester United and Manchester City, and host Arsenal in their last three games for the season. Throw in the fact that Luis Suarez will be making the trip to Carrow Road on Easter Sunday, and that is one scary run-in. Nice touch in giving last season’s FA Youth Cup winning coach Neil Adams the opportunity at the helm of affairs, but quite what he will be able to do at this stage of the season is anybody’s guess.
Tony Pulis’ enhanced reputation
Given the threat of relegation for many a club outside the traditional Top 6-7 teams in the league, Tony Pulis was highly regarded in football circles for his record of never having been relegated as manager. This time last year, however, his reputation had taken a hit; having guided Stoke City to safety and thereafter, stagnation.
Tony Pulis’ brief in taking over from Ian Holloway as manager of Crystal Palace was simple – keep Palace in the Premier League. The Eagles may have been the bookies’ choice as the most likely to be relegated, as Palace began the season looking like a lost cause. The amount of ground that Palace have gained towards safety is scarcely believable; as Pulis’ Palace are a half dozen away from the magical 40 point mark that has traditionally signaled safety.
Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea pull away amidst poor referring
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been at pains to make it clear that his team is not at pole position in the title race, purely due to Manchester City having games in hand – all this despite still being ahead of the Citizens. You can only score points out of the games you have, though, and Chelsea did what was required off them on Saturday.
Dropping Eden Hazard to the bench when there is a title at stake, even with 4 days left for a home game against Paris St Germain, was a bold move. It also was an opportunity to showcase bench strength, however, with Mohamed Salah showing exactly why Liverpool wanted his signature.
Referees did find a way this weekend of getting into the conversations of common people thanks to high profile mistakes involving the Top 3. Referee Anthony Talyor clearly missed Andy Carroll’s foul on Simon Mignolet and overcompensated by giving Liverpool a second penalty. David Silva, on the other hand, set up Manchester City’s second goal against Southampton from an offside position. Not been a good week for the officials.
Special Mention: Welcome to the Premier League, Leicester City
After 10 years, Leicester City have sealed promotion back into Premier League. This time, they will be led by former Newcastle United (caretaker) manager Nigel Pearson. The ageless Kevin Philips could start up front at the age of 41 in the 2014-15 season, while Kasper Schmeichel (son of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel) will finally get his chance in the Premier League as a first choice goalkeeper.
Eleven months ago, Troy Deeney’s stoppage time strike in the 95th minute of the playoff semi finals crushed Leicester City. Unlike clubs like Leeds United that have failed to recover from missing out, Pearson has shrewdly kept his squad together, supplemented them with inexpensive signings and extracted the best out of the Foxes.
