The Football World Cup is the biggest sporting event of this planet and it enjoys more attention of media than any other sport. While Germany and Argentina are the success stories of this World Cup, the likes of Spain, Italy and England will try to forget this tournament as soon as possible. Iker Casillas (Spain)
Much controversy was caused when Jose Mourinho decided to drop San Iker from his preferred starting XI when he returned from the injury. Real Madrid sacked Mourinho in the summer of 2013 and appointed Carlo Ancelotti as their new boss. The Italian made some positive changes to make his own mark in his first season but with regards to the choice of first choice keeper, he stuck with the decision of Mourinho and picked Lopez ahead of Casillas. But Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque refused select Lopez for the World Cup and his decision proved disastrous one.
Casillas is considered as one of the finest keepers of our generation and his trophy cabinet is enough to prove his greatness. However, his errors in the opening game against Holland raises many doubts over his ability to continue at the very top level and he was surely the biggest flop of Spain in this World Cup.
Steven Gerrard (England)
The Liverpool skipper was fresh from great Premier League season for the Redsai??i?? where he personally enjoyed a stellar campaign. Though not much was expected from the English team, fans were optimistic over their chances of progressing at least into the next round. But the three lions failed to win a single match and finished at the bottom of their group.
Gerrard was outclassed and outplayed by Andrea Pirlo in his sidesai??i?? opening game against Italy and he was the main culprit on both the occasions in the 2-1 defeat against Uruguay in Sao Paolo. Gerrard is the last surviving member of so called golden generation of English football which failed to win anything at the biggest stage and this World Cup is likely to mark the end of his long and fruitless international career.
Mario Balotelli (Italy)
Balotelli is habitual of creating more headlines for his off-field antics than his on-field displays and this World Cup was no exception for the AC Milan striker. Super Mario created another controversy during this tournament through his tweet regarding Queen Elizabeth.
Mario made excellent start to the World Cup when he scored through a brilliant header against England but this was followed by two exceptionally mediocre and uninspiring performances against Costa Rica and Uruguay. AC Milan CEO had planned to sell Balotelli after this World Cup but now he himself has admitted that no other club is willing to take any risks for his star striker.
David Luiz (Brazil)
David Luiz completed his transfer from Chelsea to Paris Saint Germain just prior to the start of the World Cup. Luiz is now the most expensive defender in the world but his displays for Brazil in the ongoing World Cup raises many questions over the price mechanism of the current transfer market.
Luiz is habitual of making advance runs to help the strikers but his risk taking attitude often opens up new spaces for the opposite side and the Germans took full advantage of this in their 7-1 routing of the hosts. Luiz was guilty of forgetting his own position on numerous occasions during the whole tournament and his team ultimately paid the price for his aggressiveness.
Xavi Hernandez (Spain)
The Barcelona maestro is regarded as the heartthrob of Spain and more than anything else, his failure to dominate midfield resulted in the early departure of Spain.
The fall of Xavi was confirmed last year itself when he put in consistently poor displays for the Blaugrana in their trophy-less season. The midfielder is 34 now and recent injuries and advancing age has taken its toll over the ability of him to make quick passes. Ai??It now seems that Del Bosque was wrong in first place to put his faith in ageing Xavi and inclusion of Koke or Cesc Fabregas would have proved more fruitful for Spain in the longer run also.
This World Cup marks the end of extremely successful international career for Xavi and his club FC Barcelona is also expected to say Adios to their faithful servant this summer. Meanwhile, Vicente Del Bosque is in process of starting a new Spanish revolution and he has plenty of talent available at his disposal to build a quality side for Euro 2016.
