English Premier League Preview: Tottenham Looking To Keep Pace With Manchester Clubs

The festive period continues in English football as all the clubs aim to get into the new year on a high. The table is starting to look segregated as the teams involved in the battle for top spot and European places to go along with the teams fighting for survival start to form groups of their own. The 2nd part of the season is about to get underway as each team gets to know more and more about what it is fighting for come the end of the season.

Let us see what lies in store for the teams up and around the country:

.

Liverpool v Newcastle United: Magpies Hope To Hit Suarez-Less Reds

ai???Ai??Venue: Anfield, Date: Friday, 30 December, Kick-off: 1945 GMT

Kenny Dalglish would be very disappointed with the results of the last two games as his side managed only two points against Wigan and Blackburn – two teams currently in the bottom three. With the fixture against league leaders City looming at the turn of the year, Dalglish will be praying to get maximum points against the Magpies in order to keep in touch with the rivals challenging for the coveted Champions League spot. However, their task won’t be easy especially without Suarez who will serve his one match ban for his gesture towards the Fulham supporters. But the good news for the manager and the fans is the return of Steven Gerrard who made a substitute appearance against Blackburn and could very well be ready to start this game.

Newcastle, on the other hand, finally seem to be recovering from their horrific injury problems despite Steven Taylor, Guthrie Ai??and Lovenkrands still out injured. Yohan Cabaye and Cheik Tiote looked on song against Bolton as the Magpies showcased their early season form which helped them reach the top four in the early part of the campaign. Alan Pardew would be looking at this game as an opportunity to get something at a ground where the Toons haven’t managed to score in the last five visits.

Man United v Blackburn Rovers: Fegie’s Men Aim To Keep Up Pressure On City

ai??? Venue: Old Trafford, Date: Saturday, 31 December, Kick-off: 12:45 GMT

Man United have been gathering momentum in the last few games despite finding themselves in an injury crisis of major proportions. With a back four of Carrick, Valencia, Evra and Fryers that finished the game against Wigan, Sir Alex would be praying to avoid such situations despite his team finishing with a 5-0 win. The manager would be hoping for a big win as a present on his 70th birthday and keep up the pressure on City who are ahead only on goal difference. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are expected to return after missing the last game through illness while Rafael could also make an appearance after being an unused sub in the last two games.

.

Blackburn who still lay at the bottom of the table despite their fighting draw at Anfield in the last game would be hoping for another miracle if they want to get anything out of the game. Mark Bunn was the star of the show in absence of Paul Robinson and he might as well keep his place even if the former England no. 1 is fit for the game. Steve Kean, who has been under the cosh to say the least, would be hoping for another gritty effort from his men in order to cause an upset at the Theatre of Dreams.

.

Arsenal v QPR: Tasty London Derby On The Cards

ai??? Venue: Emirates Stadium, Date: Saturday, 31 December, Kick-off: 1500 GMT

Gunners were left frustrated against Wolves in their last game as they failed to overcome a team who played with 10 men for the last 15 minutes of the game. However, they were lucky as they did not lose any ground in the race for 4th place as Chelsea and Liverpool also failed to win their home games. But Wenger would know better that this might not be the case every time and hence would be pushing his team to gain maximum points from this game going into the new year. Theo Walcott, who missed the last game, could be back to face the Londoners.

QPR, on the other hand, come into the game after securing a respectable draw at Swansea. Neil Warnock has already indicated that he would be looking to strengthen his squad in January and would be more than pleased if his current squad manages to take a point from the Gunners. Shaun Wright-Phillips is expected to start after not coming off the bench in the last game.

.

Bolton Wanderers v Wolverhampton Wanderers: Ai??A Proverbial Six Pointer

ai???Ai??Venue: Reebok Stadium Date: Saturday, 31 December Kick-off: 1500 GMT

Just when it seemed that Bolton season might return on track after an away win at Ewood Park, the Trotters slumped to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Newcastle. And more than the result, it was the performance that would be worrying for Owen Coyle as his team never looked in control of the game. Bolton haven’t drawn a game so far this season and Coyle will be hoping that it remains the same with the condition that his side comes out on top. Wheater and Ricketts might start after returning from injury in the last game while Cahill might well be playing his last game at the Reebok with a move to Chelsea looking imminent.

Mick McCarthy would have been very proud of his team’s fighting spirit that was showcased at the Emirates as Wolves came from behind to salvage a point despite being down to 10 men in the closing stages of the game. Wayne Hennessey has to take a lot of credit for that , but given the last few away performances of McCarthy’s men, the effort was certainly worthy of all the praise. Still, Wolves have to show a lot more of that as they find themselves just two points and a place above the relegation zone.

Chelsea v Aston Villa: Blues Hope To Recover From Latest Blip

ai???Ai??Venue: Stamford Bridge Date: Saturday, 31 December Kick-off: 1500 GMT

Chelsea, after getting themselves back in the title race, have once again suffered a major blip as they have drawn their last three games against Wigan, Tottenham and Fulham leaving them 11 points off the Manchester clubs and in 4th place. Also, the fact that Villas-Boas has all but conceded the title would not go down well with the fans or the owner. Still, with the next two games looking winnable for the Blues, this might just be the last chance for them to hang on to their slim title chances. The transfer window is also upon us which will give the manager a chance to clear the deadwood and do away with players like Anelka and Alex which might turn out to be good for the team.

Conceded The Title Already?

.

Villa have had a mixed season so far which has left them in the bottom half of the table. They have managed to get just one point out of their last three games and with a tough away trip to Stamford Bridge, manager Alex Mcleish could find himself in deep trouble going into the new year. He has also not been helped by the injury troubles as Darren Bent might be on the sidelines for longer than expected while Heskey will also miss the trip to London on New Year’s eve.

.

Norwich City v Fulham: Both Teams Looking To Move Clear Of Drop Zone

ai??? Venue: Carrow Road, Date: Saturday, 31 December, Kick-off: 15:00 GMT

Norwich have done very well at Carrow Road picking up 14 of their 19 points at home with two of their three defeats at Carrow Road coming at the hands of Arsenal and Tottenham. Paul Lambert would be looking forward to this game as an opportunity to move clear off the drop zone especially considering Fulham’s poor away form in the past few seasons. Once more, Lambert has no fresh injury worries to deal with.

Fulham, on the other hand, will be buoyed with not only the draw but also the performance at Stamford Bridge. Fulham lookedAi??lackluster in midweek against United losing 5-0 at home but the performance at the Bridge would have been the sort of response manager Martin Jol expected from his team. Nonetheless, Fulham’s season has been that way as far too much inconsistency has left them in the bottom half of the table despite having some quality players in their ranks. Zamora’s differences with the manager doesn’t look like resolving at it is the team that has been suffering the most from it and it might be the same at the Carrow road on Saturday.

Stoke City v Wigan Athletic: Frightening Britannia Awaits The Latics

ai??? Venue: Britannia Stadium, Date: Saturday, 31 December, Kick-off: 15:00 GMT

Stoke continue to play their exclusive brand of football that have been so successful for them under Tony Pulis, especially at the Britannia Stadium – one of the most feared grounds in the country. Apart from the defeat at the Etihad Stadium, the Potters have done exceedingly well in the last few games. There were apprehensions about how Stoke would cope with the league and European football, but all those have gone away as they have qualified for the knockout stages as well as climbed to eighth position in the league. Pulis will be hopeful of securing the three points against struggling Wigan to finish Stoke’s historic year on a high.

Wigan, on the other hand, come into the game after suffering a mauling at Old Trafford at the hands of Man United in the previous game. However, before that match, the Latics had won 5 points in their three previous games which included a couple of draws against Chelsea and Liverpool. In the match against United, Martinez and Wigan were unlucky too as they were harshly reduced to 10 men at a time when the match was evenly poised. Anyhow, the form book normally goes out of the window when teams visit Britannia stadium as Stoke is a different animal altogether when one compares them with other teams in the Premier League.

.

Swansea City v Tottenham: High Flying Spurs Aiming To Keep Up Their Title Challenge

ai??? Venue: Liberty Stadium, Date: Saturday, 31 December, Kick-off: 15:00 GMT

The Swans have done well at the Liberty Stadium in this season so far as they have lost just one of their nine games at home and that too at the hands of Manchester United. However, despite their good home form, they are still in 14th place owing to the poor performances on the road where they are yet to win any game. And that is why it is all the more important for them to do well in the home games. But the task won’t be easy this time around as they host a brilliant Tottenham outfit who are very high on confidence as well. The manager does not have fresh injury worries but has a good news that defender Neil Taylor could be back for the game.

Serious Title Contenders!

.

Spurs, on the other hand, continue their dream run as they sit pretty in third place in the league, 4 points ahead of Chelsea with a game in hand. Still the underdogs in the title race, Harry Redknapp would rather prefer it that way as it allows his team to play more freely without any pressure which is clearly visible in their season so far. With three home games coming up after this game, Spurs would be hoping to get three points to give themselves a great chance to keep up in the title race. Lennon, Huddlestone and Dawson are still out injured while Pavlyuchenko is set for a move to Anzhi and hence might not be involved.

.

West Bromwich Albion v Everton: Moyes Hoping For More Goals From His Team

ai??? Venue: The Hawthorns, Date: Sunday, 1 January, Kick-off: 12:30 GMT

Roy Hodgsonai??i??s men became the first team in the league this season to stop Manchester City from scoring and that is pretty much aAi??testament to the ability of Hodgson in keeping the team in good shape while defending. While West Brom did look to have set up for a draw but in the end could very well have won it. Nonetheless, it would have been a huge confidence booster for the Baggies who went into that game after winning back to back away games against Blackburn and Newcastle. Hodgson will be looking this as a game where he could get three points given Everton’s scoring woes but have a couple of injury problems in Mulumbu and Steven Reid.

Everton, on the other hand, have struggled to find the goals as they have not scored more than one goal in their last five games. In their last game as well, they were very lucky to get a penalty as Howard Webb committed a blunder which helped the Toffees come away with a point from the Stadium of Light. It will be an interesting game to watch for the neutrals as both managers are known to get the best out of the limited resources. For the Toffees, Coleman and Rodwell are doubtful for the game.

.

Sunderland v Manchester City: Martin O’ Neill Looking To Dent City’s Title Chances

ai??? Venue: Stadium of Light, Date: Sunday, 1 January, Kick-off: 1500 GMT

Sunderland are on the up since the appointment of Martin O’ Neill as their manager as they won 2 out of their last 4 games and were harshly denied in the last game against Everton owing to a shocking penalty call by the referee against them. Yet, the game against City would be a different challenge altogether for Martin O’ Neill and his team as the Blues from Manchester will be determined to win in order to keep up their title aspirations. There are a few injury problems for the Sunderland manager as well as Wickham, Campbell and Gordon could all miss the game.

Manchester City, come into the game after losing their lead to United in the last round of fixtures after they failed to get the job done at the Hawthorns. Despite that minor blip, City are still top of the table on goal difference and with United’s well documented injury problems against their strength in depth in terms of quality players in the squad, the Blues are still the favourites to win the title. Mancini might be tempted to rotate his players in order to keep them fresh for the game against Liverpool on 3rd January.
