Newcastle United and Real Madrid have stepped up their efforts to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
Newcastle United and Real Madrid are stepping up their interest in Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with the Spaniard’s uncertain role at the Etihad potentially opening the door for a late summer move.
According to Caught Offside, both clubs have Gonzalez on their radar, while Newcastle United have already opened exploratory talks with Manchester City. No formal offer has been submitted yet, but the Magpies see the 24-year-old as a potential solution to their midfield problems.
Why are Newcastle United and Real Madrid interested in Gonzalez?
Newcastle United are looking for an experienced midfielder after selling Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes this summer. Gonzalez has therefore emerged as an attractive option, particularly because the club believe regular first-team football could help him reach another level.
The Spanish midfielder’s situation at Manchester City could also work in Newcastle’s favour. Gonzalez was given only 11 minutes in City’s Community Shield clash against Arsenal, and with the Spaniard needing regular football at this stage of his career, a move could become increasingly appealing if his opportunities remain limited.
Manchester City signed Gonzalez from FC Porto in February 2025 for €60 million, and he remains under contract until 2029. However, reports suggest negotiations over a potential departure could begin around the €40 million mark, which could be considered a bargain fee.
Real Madrid’s interest adds another dimension to the situation. Los Blancos have turned their attention towards Gonzalez after failing to sign Rodri, who ultimately left City for Barcelona. The Spanish giants have added the midfielder to their shortlist while also considering Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as they assess their options.
A move away from Manchester City makes a lot of sense
Nico Gonzalez appeals to Real Madrid because of his technical qualities and familiarity with Spanish football, having developed through Barcelona’s academy before moving to FC Porto. Since joining City, Gonzalez has made 59 appearances and scored four goals, including 41 outings last season in which he accumulated just over 2,500 minutes.
However, his position in City’s long-term midfield plans appears less certain, especially with the club already strengthening by signing Elliot Anderson and close to completing the arrival of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille.
With Rodri gone, however, the club still want another high-level midfielder, meaning Gonzalez could potentially be sacrificed to create space and generate funds for another addition. For the 24-year-old, the priority is likely to be playing regularly. If City cannot offer him that opportunity, Newcastle or Real Madrid could provide an attractive alternative.
