Manchester City have informed Nico Gonzalez that he is free to leave the club this summer, handing Newcastle United a significant boost in their pursuit of the Spanish midfielder.
The 24-year-old had been expected to compete for a larger role under Enzo Maresca following the departures of Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, and Bernardo Silva. However, his future now appears increasingly uncertain.
According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope via X, City have told Gonzalez that he can move on before the transfer window closes, while Newcastle remain strongly interested in bringing him to St. James’ Park. The midfielder is also understood to be becoming more receptive to the possibility of joining the Magpies.
Newcastle handed major encouragement
Newcastle have been monitoring Gonzalez for some time and could now accelerate their interest following City’s decision. The Spaniard would provide additional depth and control in midfield, while his experience operating as a defensive midfielder makes him an attractive option for a side that has already undergone significant changes in the centre of the pitch.
A deal would not necessarily be straightforward, with City expected to demand a substantial fee and Gonzalez reportedly valued at around £50 million, the same amount they brought him from Porto in 2025. There is also an interesting internal dynamic at the Etihad, with some of the Spanish midfielder’s teammates said to be encouraging him to reject Newcastle’s advances and remain with City.
Maresca appears ready to reshape midfield
Nico Gonzalez’s potential departure would be surprising given City’s current lack of natural holding midfielders. He performed well during periods of Rodri’s absence last season and demonstrated that he could operate effectively at the base of midfield.
However, Maresca appears to prefer other options, including Mateo Kovacic, and City are reportedly prepared to replace any further departures before the window closes. That could leave Gonzalez with a decision to make between remaining and fighting for his place or accepting a more prominent role elsewhere.
Newcastle should be encouraged by this development because the biggest obstacle was always whether City were actually prepared to sell and that question now appears to have been answered. At around £50 million, Gonzalez would still represent a major investment, but his age, Premier League experience and ability to play as a number six make him an attractive option. If Newcastle can convince him that regular football is guaranteed, this is a deal that could move quickly.
