Celtic are closing in on an agreement to sign highly-rated Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo on a season-long loan deal.
The 18-year-old is expected to spend the 2026/27 campaign at Celtic Park, with negotiations between the two clubs now approaching a conclusion. The proposed agreement will be a straight loan without an option to buy, reflecting Chelsea’s belief that Emenalo remains an important prospect for the future.
Although primarily a left-back, the teenager is capable of operating in midfield, giving Celtic additional versatility as they strengthen their squad for the new season.
Celtic close to completing Landon Emenalo deal
According to Sky Sports News, the move has been delayed slightly after Emenalo suffered a minor knock while training with Chelsea. Rather than rush the process, he has been given time to recover before completing the remaining paperwork connected to his switch to Scotland.
The injury is not expected to threaten the transfer, and Emenalo is now moving closer to becoming the latest addition to Celtic’s squad. The Scottish champions have identified the Chelsea youngster as valuable cover for Kieran Tierney at left-back. Regular first-team opportunities could also provide Emenalo with an important next step in his development after progressing through Chelsea’s highly regarded academy system.
Celtic are expected to use him as both competition and rotational cover for Tierney, while his ability to step into midfield could provide further options during a demanding domestic and European schedule.
Chelsea have long-term plans for Emenalo
Chelsea’s refusal to include a permanent purchase option is significant and indicates how highly the teenager is regarded at Stamford Bridge. The objective of the loan is to provide Emenalo with exposure to senior football before returning to Chelsea and competing for a place in their first-team squad.
He is the son of former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo, but has been building his own reputation as one of the club’s promising emerging talents. A season at Celtic could provide valuable experience, particularly given the pressure of competing for trophies and the possibility of European football.
This looks like a sensible arrangement for all three parties. The Hoops will gain a talented and versatile youngster capable of providing much-needed cover for Tierney, while Chelsea retain complete control over one of their better prospects. For Emenalo, the opportunity is particularly valuable and if he can stay fit and earn meaningful minutes at Celtic, a season in Glasgow could significantly accelerate his development before he returns to Stamford Bridge next summer.
