Chelsea turn down AS Roma proposal for Jamie Gittens

AS Roma have seen a loan bid for Jamie Gittens rejected, as Chelsea are not prepared to let the English winger leave during this transfer window.

According to Sky Sports, Gittens is expected to remain at Chelsea beyond the summer window after the Blues turned down an offer from AS Roma. The Serie A giants have been searching for quality on the left flank and, after exploring several options, submitted a loan proposal for the Chelsea star.

Chelsea remain active in the transfer market, with further arrivals and departures possible before the deadline. With both Pedro Neto and Gittens attracting considerable interest (Neto from Al-Hilal, per reports), changes could still be made in the wide areas. However, having already allowed Alejandro Garnacho to leave for Aston Villa, Chelsea are not prepared to sell or loan out Gittens. The Blues need to retain forward depth in the squad.

Gittens joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £48.5 million last season. Although he produced several promising performances, an injury in February sidelined him for the rest of the campaign. Despite the recent speculation, Chelsea are not expected to entertain offers for the 22-year-old, who has attracted interest from Roma.

Roma’s difficult summer in the transfer market

Roma have endured a difficult summer as they search for attacking reinforcement, suffering several setbacks while pursuing different targets. They held a strong interest in Crysencio Summerville, but the forward eventually joined Al-Hilal earlier in the transfer window.

Roma have also been linked with Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, as per reports around the Brazilian, while Fulham’s Kevin has reportedly emerged as another potential option. However, the club have now seen an approach for Gittens rejected by Chelsea, who have no interest in allowing the 22-year-old to depart.

Per Sky Sports, Roma submitted a proposal with a reported €3 million loan fee and a €40 million purchase option. The financial terms underscore the Italian side’s commitment to securing attacking quality before the window closes.

Given Chelsea’s potential change in style under new manager Xabi Alonso, who may have less use for a traditional left-flank option, Roma may have believed that Gittens could be available. However, Alonso reportedly values Gittens as part of his plans.

Gittens expected to stay

With speculation surrounding Neto and Garnacho’s departure, Chelsea may feel the need to retain a player of Gittens’ profile. At present, there is no indication that the former Dortmund star will leave, although the situation could change as the transfer deadline approaches.

Chelsea’s decision is also influenced by Gittens’ desire to remain at Stamford Bridge. The player is reportedly a key part of Alonso’s plans and impressed during pre-season. Barring a late shift, Chelsea have closed the door on Roma—and Gittens will remain a Blue for the 2026–27 season.
