Arsenal rule out summer exit for Martin Zubimendi amid Real Madrid links

Arsenal have categorically ruled out an exit for Martin Zubimendi, dismissing speculation and interest from Real Madrid this summer.

According to Spanish news outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid have suffered a fresh setback in their pursuit of Zubimendi, as Arsenal have no intention of allowing the midfielder to leave. The Spaniard has been linked with several clubs, including Jose Mourinho’s side, but Mikel Arteta considers him an important part of his plans.

Real Madrid identified a new midfielder as one of their priorities this summer, even after the free-transfer arrival of Bernardo Silva. Rodri was their preferred target, but before Barcelona moved to sign the Spanish World Cup winner, he had been expected to join the Santiago Bernabeu.

The need for a midfielder has remained a subject of discussion at Real Madrid, with reports suggesting that the club were considering a move for Arsenal’s Zubimendi. Any deal was always expected to be difficult because of the player’s importance to Arsenal and the high fee the Gunners would likely demand. Chelsea were also reportedly interested, while the links with Real Madrid continued.

Arsenal’s resolve on Zubimendi

Arsenal have strengthened their midfield this summer by signing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. That move led to speculation over Zubimendi’s future, with reports suggesting that Arsenal could be willing to sell him during the transfer window.

The emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly also contributed to the speculation, as some reports claimed that Arteta could reduce Zubimendi’s playing time. Mourinho was reported to be keen to sign the Spaniard. However, Arsenal have now categorically ruled out an exit for the midfielder, who joined the club from Real Sociedad for £60 million last summer.

Arsenal view Zubimendi as a key member of their squad despite the changes to their midfield this summer. Arteta was asked about the Spaniard’s future during a recent media interaction ahead of the North London club’s opening-day match against Coventry City, and he dismissed suggestions that the player could leave.

When asked whether Zubimendi could depart before the transfer deadline, Arteta said, “No, he’s a really important player. Without a doubt, he was one of the best players for Arsenal last season. Without him, we would never have got into the position that we got into in the last few weeks.”

Why Zubimendi remains crucial

Zubimendi is regarded as one of the leading midfielders in his position. His consistent availability and performances for Real Sociedad also played a significant role in Arsenal’s decision to sign him. Last season, he made 57 appearances in all competitions, as he and Declan Rice were heavily relied upon by Arteta.

The arrival of Guimaraes and Lewis-Skelly’s re-emergence allow Arteta to manage minutes effectively. Therefore, despite suggestions that Zubimendi has fallen down the pecking order, he is expected to remain an important part of Arsenal’s plans.
