Crystal Palace will reportedly look to sign 28-year-old versatile English defender Joe Gomez from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
A report by the Daily Telegraph has discussed Liverpool may oversee a “mass clearout” ahead of the 2026/27 season as they attempt to correct last summer’s mistakes and return to the top of English and European football. Joe Gomez is one of the players who may depart from Anfield in the coming months, and the 28-year-old is the subject of interest from Crystal Palace.
The Eagles are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the upcoming transfer window as they look to fill Marc Guehi’s void at Selhurst Park. However, Crystal Palace will face stiff competition from AC Milan and Brighton & Hove Albion for his signature.
Joe Gomez and his Liverpool rollercoaster
Joe Gomez has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in July 2015. While the London native has been a dependable performer whenever he has been fit and available, his fitness issues have rendered him an unreliable option. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old defender’s ability to play across the backline has made him a utility man for Liverpool.
The English international has made over 250 appearances for Liverpool while providing 12 assists. Meanwhile, despite his persistent fitness issues, Gomez’s stock is high, with Crystal Palace among the prospective suitors vying for his signature this year.
A man in demand
Joe Gomez has been on Crystal Palace’s wishlist for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as the Eagles are eager to fill Marc Guehi’s void at Selhurst Park. The former skipper’s move to Manchester City has left Oliver Glasner with the bare bones of the central defensive unit, with only four recognised centre-backs available to the Austrian tactician.
Several candidates, including Natan, have thus emerged on Crystal Palace’s radar, with Gomez also a viable target. However, with AC Milan also keen on signing the 28-year-old Englishman, the South London outfit may face a tall order to land the versatile Liverpool defender.
With Crystal Palace in the bottom half of the Premier League table, they may not be able to offer European football unless they win the UEFA Europa Conference League this season. Nevertheless, the Eagles will focus on finishing the 2025/26 season on a high before turning their attention towards Gomez. Either way, the English defender is certain to leave Liverpool this summer.
