Newcastle United interested in Marc Guehi

Manchester United told to pay £60 million for Marc Guehi.

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing talented central defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace next summer.

According to Fichajes, Newcastle United have a three-man shortlist for the summer of 2024 to take Eddie Howe’s squad to the next level, which features standout Crystal Palace defensive powerhouse Marc Guehi.

The Magpies are expected to enter the market for a new centre-back in January, despite the fact that both Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar impressed in the Champions League hammering of PSG, while star defender Sven Botman should return from a knee injury at some point.

Schar, for one, has been a cornerstone of the Newcastle side since Eddie Howe took charge of the club, with the Swiss stopper one of the first names on the team sheet. However, at 32 years old, it is questionable whether the classy centre-back has much time left in his tank at the highest level.

Reports suggest Eddie Howe wants a right-sided central defender after having had an approach rejected for Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen during the past summer transfer window. Now, it seems the Magpies have turned their attention to his central defensive partner, Marc Guehi.

The St. James’ Park outfit are known to have admired the 23-year-old for some time and are ready to make their move in 2024. Guehi has established himself as a key player for the Eagles since joining the London club from Chelsea for around £20 million in 2021, making 91 appearances across all competitions, including 43 Premier League outings.

He has been a rock at the back for Palace, and despite only being 23 years old, showing that he has world-class potential. The centre-back has been given the captain’s armband on multiple occasions at Selhurst Park and is clearly deemed one of the leaders at the club.

More so, Guehi is now a consistent England international, having been called up for the October international break more recently. With such a high ceiling and also having leadership traits, you can see why Newcastle see him as a possible Schar replacement, but prising him out of Crystal Palace will take some doing.

His contract with Palace expires in the summer of 2026, and Newcastle’s interest may be waved away if the Eagles’ do not feel the need to cash in. The Magpies will likely have some major competition on their hands in the shape of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United, who are also keeping tabs on his situation.
