Real Madrid will reportedly prefer to sign Liverpool veteran Roberto Firmino instead of the free-scoring Harry Kane this summer.

According to a report by Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Roberto Firmino is a priority target for Real Madrid heading into the summer transfer window. Carlo Ancelotti wants Los Blancos to sign the free-scoring Harry Kane instead. But the Merengues prefer a low-cost option like the Liverpool veteran.

Roberto Firmino has enjoyed a legendary career since joining Liverpool from Hoffenheim nearly eight years ago. Pundits were initially sceptical about the Brazilian’s credentials to succeed as a Liverpool player. But the veteran attacker has proven his naysayers wrong with aplomb.

The 31-year-old has been the most crucial cog in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool juggernaut. And he has managed a decent tally of 13 goals and five assists in an injury-riddled 2022/23 campaign. But Firmino’s stint with Liverpool will end this summer when he departs as a free agent. And such a situation has captured the attention of Real Madrid.

The Merengues are in the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window. They already needed to sign a replacement for Mariano Diaz, who has been a bit-part player for Real Madrid for a few years. And the need to sign a centre-forward has accentuated following recent reports of a possible Saudi Arabian move for Karim Benzema.

So Real Madrid might have to sign two strikers in the summer transfer window. That is why Carlo Ancelotti is pushing Los Blancos to sign Harry Kane. But Ancelotti’s priorities do not align with Real Madrid’s preference. And the Merengues want to complete a low-cost operation for a centre forward instead.

Joselu and Roberto Firmino have emerged as the top target for Los Blancos. And they are keen on securing Firmino’s services instead of signing Kane. The stance is somewhat understandable, considering Jude Bellingham’s impending big-money arrival. But if Benzema leaves, Real Madrid will need a more prolific solution.

It will be interesting to see if Ancelotti gets his way by bringing a younger, free-scoring alternative to Real Madrid. But for now, Firmino is a top target for the outgoing La Liga champions. And an adventure in Spain might be attractive for the Liverpool veteran.
