Newcastle United will lodge an enquiry for Conor Gallagher, with Chelsea unwilling to loan the midfield prospect to the Magpies.

According to Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle United will make a final attempt to sign Conor Gallagher. The Magpies will submit their last enquiry to Chelsea for the 22-year-old. But the Blues are unwilling to loan their midfield prospect to Newcastle United this month.

Conor Gallagher has a rollercoaster ride in his first full season with Chelsea. The English midfielder returned to Stamford Bridge after a successful loan stint with Crystal Palace. But he has been in and out of the starting lineup, with Chelsea’s struggles this term contributing to his frustrations.

The 22-year-old has turned out 25 times thus far for Chelsea, chipping in with one goal and one assist. Gallagher’s frustrations at Chelsea have not gone unnoticed either, with several clubs interested in him. And Newcastle United will look to sign the young midfield prospect on deadline day.

Newcastle United joined the race to sign Gallagher a couple of weeks ago. But the Magpies have failed to make much progress thus far. Meanwhile, the interest in the Chelsea midfield prospect is hardly surprising, considering Jonjo Shelvey is joining Nottingham Forest on deadline day.

The experienced midfielder will leave a gaping hole in the Newcastle United midfield unit. And Gallagher is the ideal candidate to replace Shelvey at St. James’ Park. The 22-year-old has also attracted interest from Everton. But he does not want to join the Toffees’ seemingly sinking ship and will prioritise a move to Newcastle United instead.

According to Luke Edwards, the Magpies will submit their final enquiry to Chelsea on Tuesday. But the Blues are not interested in entertaining any offers from Newcastle United for the 22-year-old. And Chelsea’s stance is hardly surprising, considering the Tyneside giants are their rivals for a top-four finish.

Chelsea cannot strengthen a direct rival when finishing in the top four is as difficult as ever. So a January departure seems unlikely for the English midfield prospect. And with Jorginho reportedly closing in on joining Arsenal, Gallagher might earn a bigger role in Graham Potter’s squad.
