Manchester United will reportedly provide stiff competition to Barcelona for Robert Lewandowski after initiating contact with the Bayern Munich striker.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Robert Lewandowski is in contact with Manchester United over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils are set to wage a transfer battle with Barcelona in the race to sign the Bayern Munich striker.

Robert Lewandowski is in the form of his life despite being well into his thirties, having scored goals for fun in the last few years. The Polish international has enjoyed a stellar 2021/22 campaign, amassing 47 goals and four assists in 41 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions thus far.

But the Bundesliga champions are in a spot of bother over the 33-year-old’s long-term future at the Allianz Arena. Lewandowski has a little over a year left on his contract and is no closer to reaching an agreement with Bayern Munich over a bumper new deal. Such a situation has captured the attention of Manchester United and Barcelona.

Barcelona will continue making sweeping changes to the first-team squad in the summer transfer window as Xavi Hernandez looks to mould the team in his image. As a result, Martin Braithwaite will leave Camp Nou searching for a new project, while Luuk de Jong will likely return to Sevilla once his loan deal ends.

Lewandowski has thus emerged as a viable target, with recent reports claiming he is keen on moving to Barcelona. But Barcelona will face stiff competition from Manchester United in the race to sign the 33-year-old Polish international in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United will delve into the market for a striker in the summer, as Edinson Cavani will likely depart from Old Trafford as a free agent. At the same time, uncertainties surround the long-term future of Cristiano Ronaldo, with Erik ten Hag, touted to be the next Manchester United boss, does not fancy having the Portuguese forward in his squad.

Lewandowski is thus an option worth considering for Manchester United, with the Red Devils already initiating contact with the Bayern Munich striker’s representatives. But the Bavarian club’s CEO Oliver Kahn recently asserted that the Pole will not go anywhere in the summer, meaning Barcelona and Manchester United will need to keep their options open instead of putting all their eggs in one basket.
