Paul Scholes has insisted he wants the Premier League medal he may have missed out on because of the scandal involving Manchester City’s financial irregularities.
The international break produced one of the biggest stories in modern football history, as Manchester City were found guilty on virtually all of their 115 charges. The verdict stated that the club had “cheated” to gain an advantage in the league through inflated finances and sponsorship deals.
There is plenty of debate about what happened behind the scenes, with much of the attention falling on Manchester City’s success during the period in question. That includes several Premier League title wins, one Champions League title and numerous domestic cups won during that time.
In terms of the punishments, there is still no definite clarity on what might come Manchester City’s way, although pundits such as Jamie Carragher have offered their views on what might be fitting in response to the guilty verdict. Other former stars, including Roy Keane and Ian Wright, have also aired their opinions, and now former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has given his view.
Paul Scholes disagrees with Wayne Rooney
Scholes took to Instagram to express his disagreement with what Wayne Rooney said when asked about stripping Manchester City of their titles and giving them to the second-placed teams in multiple campaigns. In his comments on social media, which appeared in The Mirror, Scholes insisted that he wants his medal.
Rooney was commenting on what Rio Ferdinand had said, after the former defender stated that he would like the Premier League to strip Manchester City of their titles and name the second-placed teams as the new champions. Rooney disagreed, saying, “I have heard Rio has come out saying about getting another Premier League medal…I wouldn’t really feel comfortable accepting another Premier League medal, if I’m being honest.”
Responding to Rooney, Scholes insisted that he wants his medal, which may be because Manchester City won a Premier League title when he was still playing.
Scholes said, “Keep hearing ex-team-mates saying they want trophies taking off them but they don’t want their medals…I’m greedy, I want my medal.”
Scholes was part of the 2011/12 campaign when Manchester United lost the title to Manchester City in the final minute of the final game of the season. It came through Sergio Aguero’s now infamous goal against QPR, and Scholes is clearly making the case for being awarded a title from that season.
