Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is not too pleased with the club’s decision to sign Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo on loan.
Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Ronald Araujo represents Liverpool’s long-term defensive solution, despite praising the Barcelona defender’s qualities. The Liverpool legend delivered a mixed verdict on the loan move to Anfield during an appearance on the Football Ramble podcast.
“Look, it’s a mixture of the best and the worst, isn’t it?” Carragher said via Yahoo Sports.
Liverpool have brought Araujo in on loan as they look to strengthen their defence following Ibrahima Konate’s move to Real Madrid. The deal gives the Reds the option to make the transfer permanent, which leaves the Merseyside in control over .
Carragher believes that structure makes sense for Liverpool, even if he remains unconvinced by the player himself. Araujo offers undeniable physical and tactical strengths, but his defensive decision-making remains a significant risk.
However, the former centre-back acknowledged Araujo’s physical qualities and versatility, particularly given Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements.
“Araujo is a physical beast, aggressive, he can play as a centre-back or right-back and has first-class experience. He has been captain of Barcelona, he has played big games,” he said.
Carragher also believes the loan arrangement limits Liverpool’s financial risk while giving Araujo an opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League.
“A loan is low risk. You try it for a year, see how he adapts to the system, and if it works, you buy it. That part makes sense. It fills a gap without blowing up the budget,” he added.
However, the Liverpool legend remains concerned about Araujo’s defensive decision-making and discipline, areas he believes could be exposed in the Premier League.
Why does Carragher have concerns about Araujo?
“The passion is great, he goes into the tackles, but defending at this level is about decisions, concentration and reading the game,”
“Too often against elite teams you disconnect, give away silly penalties or get sent off. The Premier League is relentless; a mistake and they punish you. He’s had consistency and discipline issues, and his form has dropped,” he explained.
Araujo’s declining importance at Barcelona only adds to Carragher’s concerns. Although the Uruguay international featured in 38 games last season, he accumulated just over 1,600 minutes, highlighting how far he has fallen down the pecking order.
The emergence of Pau Cubarsi has been particularly significant, with the teenager becoming a preferred option at the heart of Barcelona’s defence. Carragher believes Liverpool should have pursued a more experienced centre-back rather than a player sidelined by a teenager.
“Liverpool should have gone for a centre-back with more experience instead of opting for a player who has always been a substitute for a 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi,”
“Arriving here on loan after being told that he is not a starter at Barca, he seems a bit reactive instead of a star signing,” he added.
Carragher would have preferred Liverpool to make a more permanent commitment to a defender who fits their system.
“I would rather have a permanent solution that fits into the system in the long term,”
“Let’s watch him play first, but I’m not getting excited yet,” Carragher concluded.
Araujo might not be the best possible alternative to replace Konate, but he certainly has the quality. He could be a solid short-term fix for the Reds if it clicks for him at Anfield. Meanwhile, for the Uruguayan international, a move to the Merseyside club is an enticing opportunity to get his career back on track after his recent struggles at Barcelona.
