Hamburger SV willing to sign Fabio Vieira, deal discussed

Hamburger SV chief confirms their desire to bring Arsenal misfit Fabio Vieira back to the club following an impressive loan spell.

Hamburger SV have publicly confirmed their desire to sign Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira on a permanent deal, with the Bundesliga club’s chief admitting they have already submitted an offer to the Premier League side.

Vieira returned to Arsenal earlier this summer following a productive loan spell in Germany, where he enjoyed one of his best seasons in recent years. After struggling to establish himself at the Emirates since arriving from FC Porto in 2022, the Portuguese playmaker spent the campaign rebuilding his reputation and now appears set for another move away from north London.

The 26-year-old made 31 appearances during his loan spell, contributing 13 goals and assists in an impressive campaign that convinced Hamburg they should try to retain him permanently.

Speaking about the club’s pursuit, Hamburg chief financial officer Eric Huwer admitted that securing Vieira’s signature remains a major objective.

“Fábio is a fantastic player, and it feels like we’re fighting for him every day,” Huwer said via Hamburger Morgenpost.

The Bundesliga outfit have already backed up that admiration with a formal proposal to Arsenal.

“We’ve also backed up our interest with Arsenal with financial figures; the matter is well-known. But right now, no one’s even flinching.”

Vieira’s contract with Arsenal expires next summer, leaving the Gunners with an important decision to make. Since he does not appear to feature in Mikel Arteta’s plans, this transfer window could represent the club’s final realistic opportunity to receive a transfer fee rather than risk losing him as a free agent.

Hamburg, however, are working within financial limitations and are not prepared to stretch beyond their means to complete the transfer.

Hamburg remain optimistic about signing Vieira

Huwer stressed that the club remain financially responsible while hoping their proposal proves attractive enough for both Arsenal and the player.

“We are confident that we can make Fábio a very competitive offer within our means, without taking on any debt. We are, of course, very curious to see whether he and Arsenal will accept it.”

The comments underline just how highly Vieira is regarded at Hamburg after his successful loan spell. The Portuguese midfielder originally arrived in England with a strong reputation following his impressive rise at FC Porto, but regular first-team opportunities have proved difficult to come by at Arsenal.

Loan spells have since become the best route for him to rebuild momentum, and his performances in Germany have clearly left a lasting impression.

Huwer also acknowledged that, while Hamburg would love to bring Vieira back permanently, they will not compromise the club’s financial stability to do so.

“We fell a little bit in love with Fábio last year, but we won’t be unreasonable. If Arsenal says yes, we’ll be happy to have Fábio; if they say no, we’ll be happy to have someone else.”

Negotiations are expected to continue, with Arsenal now holding the key to whether Vieira’s return to Hamburg becomes a permanent reality.
