Florentino Perez is determined to bring Jose Mourinho back to Real Madrid as their new manager ahead of next season.
Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, who is currently managing Benfica in the Portuguese top flight, could end up making an emotional return to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are looking for a new manager ahead of next season, and they seem keen on having the ‘special one’ on their bench.
According to a report from The Athletic, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is pushing to have the Portuguese manager on their bench. The 63-year-old has a great relationship with the club president, and it could play a part in his potential return.
Mourinho is one of the most decorated managers in the world of football. He has won it all and has had great success with a number of top European clubs. After doing wonders with FC Porto, Chelsea, and Inter Milan, the Portuguese manager had a three-year spell at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013.
While he didn’t manage to guide them to the UCL title, under him, they were the most feared counter-attacking team on the planet. They were scoring goals for fun and breaking records in La Liga.
Mourinho might not have had that kind of success in recent years, but he is still widely regarded as one of the best managers, and the 63-year-old could now land one of the biggest managerial jobs ahead of next season.
Mourinho could return to the Bernabeu
Real Madrid are keen on bringing him back to the club to help them get things back on track. Perez is the one driving the interest. The Portuguese tactician is the president’s favoured candidate to replace Alvaro Arbeloa.
The former Madrid defender was handed the reins on an interim basis at the start of the year, after they parted ways with Xabi Alonso. Arbeloa hasn’t been able to steady the ship, and with the club set to go trophyless, Perez is determined to bring in a top manager to help turn things around.
Mourinho is open to a return to Real Madrid, and since the decision on who will become the next manager is being driven by Perez, there are high chances of the move actually going through. However, the Madrid president doesn’t have the full confidence of the board on this decision yet.
While his contract at Benfica runs until the summer of 2027, there is a €3 million release clause that can be triggered within the 10 days after the end of the season. The finances won’t be a problem for Los Blancos; it’s all about getting the green light from the board.
