Cesc Fabregas in contention to become next Chelsea manager

Former Arsenal midfield star, Cesc Fabregas, is in pole position to be the next Chelsea manager ahead of the new season.

Following their 3-0 defeat to Brighton, which was their fifth in a row in the Premier League without a goal, Chelsea parted ways with Liam Rosenior. The Blues are now on the lookout for their next manager, and they do have quite a few top names on their wishlist.

According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, the London club are keen on bringing Cesc Fabregas back to the club. The former Arsenal star is doing wonders for Como as a manager, and the Blues consider him an ideal fit to lead their youth-centric squad.

The 38-year-old has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Rosenior, who could only last a few months at Stamford Bridge, after penning a six-year-long deal at the start of the year.

After sacking the former RC Strasbourg boss, Chelsea have appointed Callum McFarlane as their interim manager until the end of the season. In the meantime, the Blues want to figure out who their next boss will be.

While they have multiple names on their wishlist, the Chelsea board seem impressed with the work Fabregas has done at Como. He has taken them from being a lower-middle-table club to one that competes for a European spot.

His attacking and aggressive style of football has received a lot of plaudits, and the 38-year-old looks set for a move to a bigger club this summer. The Arsenal legend could return to Stamford Bridge, where he had a five-year spell as a player from 2014 to 2019.

Chelsea look to appoint Fabregas

The Blues have been keeping tabs on him for some time, with Ronseior under pressure since the start of his tenure. Now that the English manager has been sacked, the London club have ramped up their efforts to appoint the former Barcelona man as their next permanent manager.

Chelsea beleive hiring a former player, one with Fabregas’ stature, could help them get the players on side after Rosenior struggled to do so. The Spanish manager has already proved his credentials at the Italian club, and given his experience as a player, he could certainly help bring the best out of Chelsea’s young squad.

While talking about Chelsea’s new manager, O’Rourke said, “Cesc Fabregas, who we’ve previously spoken about, obviously doing a great job at Como.

“The Chelsea board have been impressed by the job he has done over in Italy. Again, he would tick a lot of boxes for Chelsea.

“He’s one of the most highly rated young head coaches out there and obviously has links to the club as well during his time at Chelsea as a player.

“There will be a number of candidates that the club are going to look at and evaluate, because they need to get this managerial decision right.

“They can’t keep chopping and changing managers because it’ll just mean they keep falling behind their big rivals.”

Given the number of managers Chelsea have changed in the recent past, they can’t afford to get this one wrong. As a result, the Blues will carefully examine everything before taking a call. For now, Fabregas is in pole position, but he is not the only one on their radar.
