Manchester United initiate negotiations with Julian Nagelsmann

Manchester United will reportedly prioritise appointing 38-year-old German tactician Julian Nagelsmann as their next head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.

A report by Spanish outlet Fichajes Julian Nagelsmann is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the managerial market for a new head coach amid emerging doubts surrounding Michael Carrick and his ability to lead their project beyond the 2025/26 season.

While the English tactician has been impressive since taking over as the head coach in January, his long-term future at Manchester United is uncertain. So, the Premier League giants have zeroed in on Nagelsmann as their top managerial target, initiating discussions over a possible summer move.

Julian Nagelsmann and his managerial career so far

Julian Nagelsmann has been among the world’s most desirable young managers since rising in prominence at TSG Hoffenheim a decade ago. The 38-year-old took the world by storm with his exploits with Die Kraichgauer before seeing his stock soar during his spell with RB Leipzig. However, he had to wait until his spell with Bayern Munich to finally enjoy trophy-winning success.

The German tactician won the 2021/22 Bundesliga title while picking up the DFL Supercup in 2021 and 2022. However, Nagelsmann’s spell with Bayern Munich ended abruptly, and he has rebuilt his reputation since taking over as the German national team’s head coach. Under his tutelage, Die Mannschaft have made considerable progress while losing only six time in 31 outings.

What next?

While Julian Nagelsmann is ready to lead Germany to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, widespread reports have mooted a return to club football, linking him with several well-known clubs. Manchester United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature as they look for a new poster boy for their project.

The Ruben Amorim experiment did not yield the desired results, and Michael Carrick has steadied the ship in the last few months. However, while the Englishman is confident about his Manchester United prospects, the Red Devils have identified Nagelsmann as their top managerial target.
