Transfer News: Barcelona considering Sergino Dest sale

Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the possibility of selling Sergino Dest following a less than convincing performance against Real Madrid.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Barcelona are surprisingly considering the prospect of cashing in on Sergino Dest. The Catalan club’s decision makers were not impressed with his performance in the recent game against Real Madrid, which is prompting them to take this call.

Sergino Dest spent most of his formative years with Ajax before breaking into the first-team setup at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in 2019. And after a year with the senior side, the USMNT international managed to secure a big move to Barcelona, who came calling in the summer of 2020, desperate in search of a right-back.

Over the past year or so, the 20-year-old has been on a fine upwards trajectory while showcasing an impressive ability to play on either flank as a full-back or even higher up the pitch as a right-winger. To date, Dest has made 52 appearances for Barcelona, chipping in with three goals and four assists along the way.

However, the Barcelona board were left unimpressed with his showing in the recent El Clasico against their bitter rivals Real Madrid. And now, they are pondering whether they should sell Dest next summer and initiate the search for a new wide attacker or persist with the youngster.

The USMNT international does not have any shortage of suitors, having recently been linked with Bayern Munich while several other clubs have shown an interest as well. The decision to sell Dest, though, will be quite bizarre, to say the least, even though the 20-year-old has not always set the house on fire.

Barcelona, on their part, having been linked with several right-backs while in attack, they have shown an interest in Raheem Sterling, Yeremi Pino and a few others. So, selling Dest could help them in raising some funds for the signature of a replacement.

For all intents and purposes, though, this story appears to be one that is hard to believe, although it remains to be seen if Barcelona do decide on cashing in on Dest in next summer’s transfer window. Going by the potential he has shown as a right-winger, keeping hold of the youngster ought to be the correct call.
