Transfer News: Liverpool and Manchester City among four clubs in pursuit of Roma playmaker Leandro Paredes

Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly interested in Roma’s midfielder Leandro Paredes, but face competition from Juventus and Monaco.

Talksport have reported that Liverpool and Manchester City are eyeing a move for Roma playmaker Leandro Paredes. The report states that the Premier League duo hope to convince the Argentine midfielder to move to England, but the player has thus far turned down all approaches in order stay at the Italian capital.

The report also states that Liverpool and City are likely to face competition for the midfielder, with Juventus and Monaco also registering their interest in the player. Schalke appeared to be front-runners for Paredes earlier in the summer, but the player did not fancy a move to Germany.

The 22-year-old spent the last season on loan at fellow Serie A side Empoli, appearing in 33 league matches for the club with a return of two goals and an assist. Paredes had an average rating of 7.04 over the last term for Empoli and seems to have attracted a lot of attention with his performances (stats via whoscored).

The report from Talksport also stated that Empoli have enquired about the possibility of taking Leandro Paredes for another season-long loan. Paredes is said to prefer to remain in Italy, which gives Juventus and Empoli the edge over their competitors. The player’s future also depends on whether Roma wish to part with the player, and if so, whether they are willing to sell him. If the club wish to keep hold of the player, they are likely to favour a loan move to Empoli.

Juventus and Liverpool both have an abundance of talent and numbers in midfield along with Manchester City, and a move to any of those three clubs is likely to restrict his playing time. That leaves Monaco and Empoli as the ideal destinations for the Argentine playmaker. The window is open for another three weeks and this looks like a transfer that is likely to become clearer towards the end of the month.
