Former Bayern Munich Star Unimpressed With Guardiola’s Callous Departure

Pep Guardiola played around quite a bit with the club before finally announcing his departure and plans to join Manchester City, and it looks like at least one ex-Bayern Munich star didn’t take too kindly to that.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Dietmar Hamann has slammed Spanish manager Pep Guardiola for his prolonged departure saga, with Pep keeping Bayern on tenterhooks about his decision, before announcing his plans to leave next season.

“Guardiola took Bayern for a ride in my opinion,” Hamann said. [via:fourfourtwo.com]

“The whole situation was not what you normally see at Bayern. I was surprised to see Bayern let this happen. I think Bayern lost a bit of respect for Guardiola, because he did not always show his cards. Bayern will have a different view than about six weeks ago.”

Good not Great

Hamann added that Bayern Munich may have handed over too much power to the Spaniard and he had become an untouchable power at the club. The benchmark for Guardiola’s success, according to him, will be how the Bavarian club fare this year in the Champions League.

“I will not go as far as to say the backed the wrong horse, but the Champions League will be the ultimate test. If they crash out again like in the last two years, Pep’s era at the club will have been good, but not great.”, he said.

Pep Guardiola has led the Bavarians to back to back Bundesliga titles and is all set to help them claim a 3rd one in a row, with the club currently 8 points ahead of second place Borussia Dortmund.

Champions League success, however, has eluded him at the club and they face off against Serie A giants Juventus this time around in a tough round of 16 fixture. It remains to be seen if Guardiola ends his time in Germany on the high of a European triumph or not.
