Spanish Football Suspended From May 16 Amid TV Rights Strike

All Spanish football competitions will be suspended later this month in a strike that could ‘indefinitely’ affect La Liga and the Copa del Rey in the final weeks of the 2014-15 season.

The strike, set to begin with penultimate round of La Liga games next weekened, originates from a disagreement over television rights with the Spanish football federation unhappy with the government over a revenue distribution dispute.

As it stands there are just three games left to play in the Spanish top tier, with Barcelona leading Real Madrid by two points at the summit, while Barca are also set to face Athletic Bilbao in the cup final on May 30.

All matches from the May 16 start date of the strike will be suspended including the showpiece Copa Del Rey final at the Nou Camp at the end of the month.

This weekend’s fixtures, including Barcelona vs Real Sociedad and Real Madrid vs Valencia will not be affected.

The vital game between Atletico De Madrid vs Barcelona would be suspended as well as Barcelona’s final home game against Deportivo would also be suspended. Real will have their games against Espanyol and Getafe suspended.

A statement by the federation said it was unhappy with being awarded only 4.55% of pools revenue, though it said it was still open to dialogue.
