Former Real Madrid president, Ramon Calderon, says that Jose Mourinho could not cope with the pressure at Real Madrid.
Current Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 winning Copa Del Rey, La Liga and Spanish Supercup in the three seasons. However, his tenure ended on a sour note as dressing room squabbles and inability to end the 2012-13 season with any major silverware eventually led to the Portuguese exiting the club to return to Stamford Bridge.
Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon claimed that a Real Madrid manager goes through a lot of pressure and said that Mourinho failed to cope with it.
“To be a manager of Real Madrid is really, really difficult,” Calderon told BBC World Service. “See what happened to Mourinho.
“He is someone who is used to coping with pressure and he couldn’t.
“When Mourinho left, things were in a really bad situation,” said Calderon, who was president from 2006-2009. “He had to leave the club after three years of a lot of problems, a lot of confrontations.”
Jose Mourinho arrived in Spain to manage a Los Blancosa in 2010 replacing Manuel Pellegrini. In his first season as manager, Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and won the Copa Del Rey. The second season saw the best of Real Madrid under Mourinho as the Spanish giants won the league with a record 100 points. His final season however, ended on a bitter note as Real Madrid failed to win any silverware and Mourinho ended up upsetting some of the senior members of the squad (read Casillas and Pepe).
Mourinho, whose main objective at Real Madrid was to bring back the Champions League, failed to clear the semi-final stage in all three seasons. He came closest to taking The Whites to the 2012 final as Real Madrid lost to Bayern on penalties.
Mourinho was replaced by Ancelotti last season and the Italian went on to achieve what was required from him in his first season in-charge. Ancelotti won the coveted La Decima last season and also won the Copa Del Rey. However, Real Madrida s recent slump has seen him garnering some criticism. Calderon added further fuel to the speculation conceding that Ancelottia s role at the club is not guaranteed to be long-term and Real might be interested in Joachim Low.
“To be here more than two, three years is really a big task,” he said. “I think he has done a very good job, not only because he won the Champions League but because things are calm, relaxed and everything is smooth.
“I have read Joachim Low is one manager we would like but it is always rumour and we will have the rumours until the next five months when it is decided whether definitely Ancelotti will be here.”
