Manchester City Spending Big, But Spending Right – Make A?47m Offer For Kevin De Bruyne

Manuel Pellegrini is looking to further improve his attacking options for the season, with 24-year-old Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne reportedly the subject of a A?47m bid from the Citizens.

Following a disappointing 2014-2015 season for Manchester City, it appears as though the club hierarchy have targeted this summer as one of transition – the Citizens appear to be targeting a reduction in the average age of what remains a decidedly ageing squad.

Although Manuel Pellegrini still has the core of his City squad intact – including the likes of Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Yaya Tour , David Silva and Sergio AgA?ero – only Hart and AgA?ero are on the right side of 29.

As such, even as the football world shakes its collective head in bewilderment at the objectively exorbitant transfer fee involved in the Raheem Sterling transfer – or the fee that will be required to prise De Bruyne away from Germany – Manchester City chiefs Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano will know they are taking long overdue steps in preparing the team for the best part of the next decade.

A player that will help secure the team’s future in the attacking department is Bundesliga Player of the Year Kevin De Bruyne, whose summer transfer saga appears to be coming to a head following a mammoth bid by Manchester City.

Manuel Pellegrini has seemingly identified De Bruyne to further improve what is already one of the best attacks in the league. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away all summer, and it seems as though Manchester City have taken concrete steps towards making that happen.

According to English newspaper The Guardian, City have offered Wolfsburg A?47 million for the former Chelsea FC midfielder’s services. The report claims the offer is an initial A?40 million, with a further A?7 million in add-ons – an offer they claim is close to being acceptable by the Bundesliga side.

The news was corroborated by the reliable Kristof Terreur – a London-based Belgian journalist with close connections to top Belgian footballers – who confirmed that a A?46 million bid had been made, although Wolfsburg were still to accept it.

If the reports are indeed true, the bid would ostensibly be high enough to tempt Wolfsburg to sell.

There is an obvious commonality between Pellegrini’s new signings this summer – Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph, Patrick Roberts and Enes A?nal are all at or below the age of 25, with the former three being English footballers.

Possible new signing Kevin De Bruyne would fit right in to that group, suggesting the Citizens are making a concerted effort to reduce the average age of their squad and reinvigorate it with the injection of talented young players with enormous potential.

The bonus with the likes of Sterling, Delph and Roberts is, of course, that they will count as home-grown players in the coming years. Filling the home-grown quota has been something of a worry for the Citizens in recent years, which is why it makes sense for the club to have made the signings they have this summer.

Kevin De Bruyne could yet improve as a footballer, and although A?47 million falls firmly under the ‘silly money’ category, there is no doubt he could be a vital player for the club for years to come. At long last, it seems as though the blue half of Manchester has woken up to one of the major issues with its team – its staleness.

The club are, in effect, doing what the likes of Chelsea FC have done so efficiently since their Champions League win in 2012, bringing in the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, C sar Azpilicueta and Kurt Zouma amongst others.

Manchester City will be contenders for the title this season, and their summer spending will go a long way towards ensuring that that does not change for the foreseeable future.
