Del Bosque Defends Misfiring Costa, Criticises ‘Disrespectful’ Fans

Spain national team manger Vicente del Bosque has backed misfiring striker Diego Costa and was also seen criticizing fans who booed Gerard Pique.

Spain leapfrogged Slovakia to the top of Group C in Euro qualifiers courtesy of a 2-0 win, last night. Jordi Alba and Andres Iniesta got on the score-sheet for La Roja as the Spaniards avenged last October’s 2-1 loss at the hands of Slovakia.

Chelsea FC striker Diego Costa fired another blank and has now scored only one goal in eight appearances for La Roja. The Brazilian-born Spanish striker opted to play for Spain last year before the World Cup. The 26-year-old did win a penalty for his side, which was converted by captain Andres Iniesta. Jordi Alba had opened the scoring for Spain with a neat header.

“He kept the defenders busy” – Del Bosque on Costa

However, manager Vicente del Bosque has backed the misfiring striker, confident that he will find his shooting boots and praised the former Atletico Madrid man’s movement and his ability to keep the defenders occupied.

Speaking following the match, as quoted by The Guardian, del Bosque said:

a Of course I would like him to score but he did some good work.

a Against a team playing so defensively the player who has the most difficult job is the one in his position. He moved well, he kept the defenders busy. We have to be patient. A lot of the time when he gets the ball he has his back to goal.a

. Del Bosque criticised ‘disgraceful’ fans who booed Gerard Pique

Del Bosque also criticised Spanish fans, who are believed to be Real Madrid supporters, for booing and whistling at Gerard Pique. The former Manchester United defender allegedly made some remarks towards the Real Madrid support recently, which did not go down well with the supporters.

a I find it disgraceful that there are people who whistle a national team player.

a Gerard played fantastically well today.a
