The Blues’ striker has struggled for form this season, but has acknowledged that he needs to improve both in terms of his goals tally as well as his overall performance on the pitch
The Brazil-born Spain international was in the starting line-up on Wednesday as Chelsea FC beat FC Porto 2-0 in the final UEFA Champions League group stage game at Stamford Bridge, but the former Atl tico Madrid striker’s lack of confidence was clear to see — indeed, it was something manager Jos Mourinho commented on after the game.
Diego Costa has scored just three goals in the league this season, eight fewer than at the same stage last season, and has come under a lot of criticism for his antics on the pitch — the latest of which involved the 27-year-old throwing his bib in frustration at Mourinho, after not being brought on as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Diego Costa acknowledges error of judgement
The Chelsea FC striker accepted that he was wrong to do what he did against Spurs, but insisted that the incident has not had any lasting effects on his relationship with Mourinho. Costa also acknowledged the need for improvement in his performances, not only to help his club, but also to aid Spain at the 2016 EURO Championship in France next summer.
He is quoted by ESPN FC as saying: “I have to improve a bit. The start of the season has not been good for me — not in how I have played nor in goals.
“I know I have to be better to go to Euro 2016 with Spain. I have to work hard and fight, but I know I have time to improve and I hope I will.
“The bib [incident] is in the past. I made a mistake, but my relationship with Mourinho is amazing, we get on really well. There are things you need to control, but the bib thing was an impulse.”
Chelsea FC need Costa to come good
Mourinho’s men have been reliant on the individual quality of the likes of Willian for their goals this season, and desperately need their star striker to come good sooner rather than later.
The lack of options up front has been particularly evident in the last two Premier League games the Blues have played, with Eden Hazard starting as a false 9 ahead of Diego Costa, who has been benched for his poor form.
There were signs of improvement against FC Porto, with Costa more energetic than he has been this season, but the forward also missed clear cut opportunities to score on at least two occasions.
For Chelsea FC’s sake, Diego Costa needs to return to top form if anything is to be salvaged from this season.
