Stevan Jovetic produces a master-class as Manchester City defeat Liverpool FC 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium to send a strong message to their title rivals.
Manchester City have started their title defence in an emphatic fashion with a clinical display against Liverpool last night as Stevan Jovetic scored a brace.
Liverpool started the match brightly and looked the better team for most of the first half, till they conceded in the 41st minute of the match. The goal arrived from a defensive error as Dejan Lovren failed to properly deal with a cross and his tame header was well anticipated by Jovetic and the former Fiorentina forward finished past Simon Mignolet with aplomb.
The 24-year-old forward, who spend most of the last season on the side-lines due to injuries, doubled Cityai??i??s lead in the second half as he applied the finishing touch to a well worked move. Sergio Aguero, who scored against Newcastle United after coming on as a substitute, maintained that record as put the game beyond doubt in the 69th minute of the match.
Brendan Rodgers made a lot of changes in the second half and they managed to score a consolatory goal in 83rd minute of the game as Joe Hartai??i??s save from Rickie Lambertai??i??s header rebounded off Pablo Zabaletaai??i??s knee into the back of the net.
Liverpool werenai??i??t poor in the game, but Manchester City were clinical and punished every mistake the Merseyside club made at the back. Brendan Rodgers felt that his side needs to be quicker in their build up play and be more direct in the final third.
“For the first 40 minutes, I thought we were the better team,
“But we just switched off at the end of the half. 2-0 was then difficult for us. It killed us a little bit.
“Credit to the players, they kept going. We will get better as we go along.
“We needed to be a bit quicker in our actions, in the final third… a bit more dynamic.” ai??i?? The Liverpool manager said.
The Reds also suffered two injuries during the match as Glenn Johnson limped off the pitch and Alberto Moreno twisted his ankle.
“Glen looks like he has pulled his thigh. We will assess that tomorrow.
“Moreno has twisted his ankle on the AstroTurf.” ai??i?? Rodgers added.
Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini praised Jovetic for his wonderful performance in the match and is pleased at how he is now beginning to fulfil his potential after struggling with his fitness last season.
