With the transfer window fast approaching, clubs get ready to welcome new players and send off old ones. Tottenham have one such arrival eagerly awaiting his turn, Dre Yeldin. Who is he and how does he fit in?
Born in Seattle, on July 1993 DreAndre Roselle Yedlin started playing football at the age of 4 by watching his uncle from the side-lines. Eventually spotted by Seattle Sounders youth director, Dre was brought in for his attacking style of play. With his ability to get in crosses and track people with his explosive pace, the young American thrived on the wings.
As a student of the Oai??i??Dea high school, Yedlin was part of the Washington Youth Soccerai??i??s State Olympic Devolopment Program. I 2011 after stints at Emerald City FC and Northwest Nationals, he was admitted into the Seattle sounders youth academy in 2010-11. After representing Akron College for two season and the Seattle Sounders U-23, in 2013, he signed for Seattle Sounders FC as their first home grown player.
Yedlinai??i??s first game although was a loss was a historical one as he became the first ever rookie to be featured in the MLS team of the week. He scored his first goal in a 3-1 win against Tigers in the CONCACAF Champions league. In July 2015, he was named in the MLS All start team being the first rookie to feature in this team.
Dre Yedlin was first included in the national team in 2013 when he was named part of US under 20 Fifa World cup squad. Churning out a noteworthy performance saw him receive a call to the senior national team and was eventually high in Klinsmanai??i??s pecking order. After USA were named in the group of death for the wold cup, He made his debut against Portugal and gained an assist as he helped Dempsey score a late winner for his side. His commendable performance against Belgium where he shut down the Chelsea winger Hazard, earned him praise was what brought the sport light onto him.
Tottenham Work Permit
With a noteworthy performance in Footballai??i??s biggest tournament, Offers rushed in from Roma, Bremen and Anderlecht. Tottenham however in the summer transfer window signed Dre Yedlin who was drawn to the club due to the American ties it shared with Clint Dempsey and Brad Freidel. Staying back for the short MLS season he was to join Tottenham either in January or June. However having faced a problem to receive a work permit, it was uncertain when the right back would arrive at London. There were initial fears as he would have to seek a Latvian passport to obtain his work permit. According to the Work permit criteria, a non-British player must either be part of nation who is a British crown dependant or a member of the European economic area. If such criteria were nto me he would have to obtain a Governing Body Endorsement. Having a grandmother from the Baltic States, Yeldinai??i??s way out seemed to be to apply for a Latvian passport. But with the Governing body endorsement, the American can now complete his move to White Hart Lane.
How he will fit in?
Tottenham have had a problem with regular right back role off-late. Up until then they were blessed with the return of Kyle Walker they used a host of second string and makeshift center-backs. Initially starting with Dier, then moving on to Naughton and finally improvising with Chiriches, Spurs right side of defense seemed to be the weakest link as they have conceded most number of goals in play from that wing. With Kyle Walker back in the squad the manager can breathe a sigh of relief as his defense is slightly reinforced. However Kyle Walker has never been one reputed for his amazing defensive qualities. Heai??i??s fast, has a thunderous right foot and can deliver a good set of crosses. However, Walker has often been criticised for his poor positioning and the fact that he is beaten easily and is then tempted to foul the opponent.
Ai??Dre Yedlin is a right back who is essential to the Tottenham squad. With as much pace as the player to whom he will most likely be an understudy it will be a while before he has acclimatised to the club and league before he is introduced to the starting eleven. However witnessing his world cup performance one could say his defensive capabilities are far superior to that of Walker in his current form and is only set to get better as he ages.
One other important aspect that could work for the American is the fact that his style of playing much like Walkerai??i??s would suit and enable the manager to get more out of his Argentine winger Eric Lamela. In the game against Burnley, no doubt Lamela was outstanding, however a portion of the credit must go to the fact that there existed an attacking right back to support him in the form of Kyle Walker. Much like how Bale burst into the scene with Asso-Ekotto backing him, Lamela would also need a supportive wing back to enable him to be lethal. With Walker bursting up and down whilst hugging the touch line, Lamela linked up beautifully and was given the freedom to cut into the middle occasionally and that is what led to his goal. Dre Yeldin with similar attributes may be a key member to the squad as he would offer the same qualities the other replacement right backs couldnai??i??t and hence unlock Lamelaai??i??s potential. Unlike batman, Dre Yedlin is the right back Spurs might not deserve, but surely the right back they need.
