14th Febuary 2014, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho launched a jibe on Arsene Wenger saying, ai???He (Wenger) is a specialist in failure”. On a day of love and romance, these bitter words came out of the Portuguese’s boss mouth and earned harsh criticism. While Chelsea fans enjoyed their loud mouth boss’s ‘banter’, almost every other outfit of the Premier League, fans and manager alike sympathized with the Frenchman and thought Mourinho’s words were totally uncalled for. After all, this is the man who led ‘The Invincibles’, who has given the Arsenal team sustainability, and always made sure they were right among the top competing on all fronts.
Wenger’s 1000th game in charge. Poetically or not (maybe the two knew they would be taking on each other), Arsenal were up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. This was a game Arsenal needed to win for their manager, not because of the intensity and rivalry shared between the two clubs and their bosses, but because this was simply a landmark occasion for the Frenchman, and something he would like to cherish.
Seven minutes into the game, MourinhoAi??saw his Blues roar into a 2-0 lead courtesy goals from ‘old man’ Eto’o and the outstanding but heavily under-rated (perhaps because of the quality of individuals in that Chelsea team) Andre Schurrle.
Then came the most talked about incident in the 13-14 Premier League season.Ai??Chelsea were awarded a penalty when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain attempted to push an Eden Hazard shot, which looked like it was going wide anyway, past the goal with his fingertips.Ai??Referee Andre Marriner was going to show the red card, and did so taking his time while also awarding a spot kick. Only, he showed it to Kieran Gibbs, who along with the bemused Arsenal players, protested his innocence. Replays clearly showed Oxlade-Chamberlain approaching the referee to tell him it was he who was guilty. Marriner however, refused to overturn his decision. This was perhaps the most hysterical thing that happened all season long.
Not so hysterical for Arsenal though, as Hazard kept his cool and scored from the spot giving the hosts an almost unbeatable 3-0 lead. Arsenal were also a man down now.
Oscar made it 4-0 before the half-time, as he converted from now AC Milan striker Fernando Torres’s low cross. It took Arsenal about 20 minutes to be 4-0 down against Liverpool at Anfield about a month back. It took them double the time now, but is that something to really boast?
Twenty minutes after the break, Arsenal hadn’t conceded and it looked like they would go home with a now respectable looking score-line. However in the 66th minute, Oscar doubled his numbers as he scored from outside of the box and made it 5-0. He was then replaced by new signing Mohamed Salah. Just five minutes after the fifth goal, Salah converted from a clever pass byAi??Nemanja Matic and made the final scoreline 6-0.
This was Jose Mourinho’s biggest Premier League victory as Chelsea manager and also the first time in Chelsea’s history that they have scored six times against their London rivals.
Arsenal’s title hopes were squashed two times before- in December, when they lost 6-3 to Manchester City. But they got back and started rebuilding. They got back in the thick of things and started getting results and were again competing for the trophy. Then, on 8th February, Wenger took his side to Anfield and the home side routed the visitors 5-1, scoring the first four goals in 20 minutes. The league-leaders at the time were given a harsh wake up call. After that match, Wenger said about his side’s title chances,Ai??”The result raises questions, but I still think we can win the league”.
It was truly over after this humbling. Fans knew that it was. While Wenger fans can say that he won a trophy in the particular season (FA Cup) and Mourinho won zilch, the way Arsenal lost the plot through the course of last season, was something to witness.
To call someone as respectable in the footballing world as Wenger a ‘specialist in failure’ is wrong as obviously defining success by trophies and titles is a very on-the-surface and foolish thing to do. But to then go and back it up with a 6-0 scoreline is special, and the self proclaimed Special One proved himself right, which perhaps in his books, is an achievement right on top.
Jose Mourinho now boasts an 11-game unbeaten record against his bitter London rival. Chelsea are currently cruising in the league. Arsenal are also unbeaten, but the Blues enjoy a 6 point cushion over the Gunners. A win for Arsenal would make the top 4 spots more open, early on in the season. A win for Chelsea would not only establish that it isAi??Chelsea who will be winning the league, with a good margin probably, but that Arsenal still need to mould themselves into a title-winning team.Ai??It would be especially interesting to see if Wenger’s men can produce a master-class, and can give their boss something to savor in this particular fixture, at long last.
