Liverpool and Chelsea meet today, at Anfield, in a match that could pretty much be the title clincher for the Reds, if they manage to win against Jose Mourinho’s men.
Liverpool are currently the only side in the league to be undefeated this calender year. Interestingly, Liverpool’s last loss of the league came in December when they lost to the Blues 2-1.
The importance of every game is always a lot, but Brendan Rodger’s team would particularly view this game with concern and nervous excitement as they would want to get the three points to put Chelsea out of the title race.
Here is a look at three things Liverpool need to do to win the game:
1. Tackle Nemanja Matic
Nemanja Matic is presently the best defensive midfielder in the league and has justified why Chelsea spent so much to get him back from Benefica. Chelsea were able to defeat Liverpool at home earlier this season because of a major reason- for almost the full 90 minutes, we saw David Luiz dealing with Jordan Henderson and making him totally useless in the process. Henderson and Gerrard are the two players who start Liverpool’s lethal attacks. They’re the ones who with their fluid movement, link up the play between Suarez, Sterling, Sturridge and Coutinho.
Henderson misses out this crucial tie as he is facing suspension after a red card against Manchester City. Thus, Chelsea will be in a better position to tackle just one such player in the picture- Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The 33 year old has astoundingly transformed his game and position this season and now plays as a deep lying playmaker, who is starting attacks and regualarly tracking back to give aid to his defenders, often being called ‘the third centre back’.Ai??Matic can’t play Chelsea’s mid week clash against Atletico in the Champions League which makes him a sure starter. Mourinho would have definitely given the player instructions to deal with Liverpool’s captain so that he is rendered unable to start attacks and make those mouth watering diagonal passes. Liverpool need to make sure Gerrard is not shut off Ai??with Matic marking him through the game.
Matic would also be shieding his own defence and being the third centre back for his team. His role has made Chelsea sometimes impenetrable, a club which already boasted the tightest backline. Liverpool’s attackers will have to deal with the threat of Matic and make sure of two things- He does not man mark Gerrard and cut off Liverpool’s main supply of starting attacks and he does not prove to be so effective in his job that the Reds are not able to do what they do best- score goals.Ai??
2. The new SAS have to step up, if Sturridge starts from the bench
There is a possibility of Daniel Sturridge missing out the second game against his old side after his injury against Manchester City. While it looked like the player would be able to make a comfortable return against the Blues, Brendan Rodgers could not confirm this in his pre-match conference and said that the striker would have to be assessed before the game.
Sturridge missing out could prove to be a huge blow for the Reds, but the Liverpool manager was right when he said that Liverpool have coped before as well, so they will cope now too.
Against Norwich City, Raheem Sterling was the player who stepped up and gave Liverpool the win, scoring two goals and assisting Suarez’s other goal in the 3-2 win, which without his contributions, could have held a very different result.
This game is going to be the biggest test for the Reds. The best attack takes on the meanest defence. Chelsea has been very good at ‘parking their bus’ and they did that just a few days ago against Atletico Madrid. Knowing that a draw would mean two points dropped for the Merseyside club and hence make their other two games more difficult, obviously with more pressure, Jose Mourinho’s side would probably go into the match with the same philosophy- put bodies in front of goal and stop the likes of Suarez and Sterling to step up.
If Sturridge starts from the bench, Raheem Sterling has to make sure he doesn’t get intimidated by the occasion, and performs like he has in the last few games. The 19 year old would have to become Liverpool’s second striker and contribute with his goals and more importantly, link up with Luis Suarez so that the Uruguayan makes his usual contribution.
3. Liverpool have to play their own, bold game (without defensive errors)
Liverpool have to go into this match with confidence and more importantly with a positive attitude. If the Reds, who have not so far, succumb to pressure, the match would be gone even before the whistle blows. Brendan Rodgers’s side has to play its natural game and not get overwhelmed by the bodies Chelsea puts on the line to shield its own goal. Liverpool thrive on counter attacks and attacks in general. They can’t treat this match any different.
The Reds can’t take Chelsea’s attack easily too. Mohamed Salah, the inauspicious name on Merseyside would probably start the match. Schurlle and the likes might get a start too as one can’t take Mourinho’s pre-game talks seriously anymore. This means that Chelsea’s attack would be as much a worry as the visitor’s defence. Liverpool have conceded 44 goals, which is quite surprising for a team sitting on top. Two more goals would mean that the tally is the worst by a title winner (if Liverpool do win the league) in a 38-game Premier League season, beating Manchester United in 1995.
