Chelsea FC grab an important away goal against Galatasaray in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Turk Telecom Arena.
The pre-match stories was all about the Didier Drogba taking on his former club and manager, and the former Chelsea striker did create some problems for the Blues defence in the match. But Jose Mourinho will be disappointed with this draw as his side missed a lot of opportunities to kill this game, yet the tie now hangs in balance, although Chelsea have the advantage of an away goal going into the second leg.
Galatasaray were expected to be compact and more organized in this tie at the back, but to everyoneai??i??s surprise Roberto Mancini opted for a very open and attacking formation. This played into the hands of Chelsea as the Galatasaray defence held a ridiculously high line, despite the fact that there was no pressing in the midfield. It allowed the Chelsea runners to get behind their defence on numerous occasions and finally Fernando Torres opened the scoring in the 9th minute of the match with a calm finish. The goal arrived down the left as Andre Schurrle released Cesar Azpilicueta down the wings and the left backai??i??s cut back left Torres with an empty net in front of him. It was suicidal defending from Galatasaray and they can only count their stars that Chelsea managed to score only one goal in the first half.
Chelsea continued to create, and waste, opportunities in the second half, something which they were left to rue as Galatasaray got back into the game after some tactical changes by Mancini. The home side found the equalizer from a corner as Aurelio Chedjou was allowed to volley home Sneijderai??i??s delivery from six yards out. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Galatasaray are still in this tie courtesy of that second half goal.
Jose Mourinho stated his disappointment about the fact that his side didnai??i??t manage to score more goals in the first half as the final ball, or shot let them down.
“This is Turkey, this is Istanbul, this is Galatasaray.
“It is not easy. In the first half it was our game and we had chances to kill the game.
“I am not critical of my strikers because they had a good game, but overall when we have counter-attack situations we are missing the right pass or the right choice, and a second goal would have changed the flow of the game completely.
“In the second half they put pressure on us. They have very powerful strikers and the full-backs are both very good.
“Fernando and Schurrle were both in trouble in the second half. Fernando was exhausted and also Schurrle as well, because he had a yellow card.” ai??i?? The Chelsea manager said.
Mourinho has also urged the Chelsea fans to replicate the type of atmosphere his side encountered in Turkey.
“The result is not amazing. The situation in the second leg will be difficult.
“If Stamford Bridge can give 10 per cent of what this public gives then that would be fantastic for us.
“We have to try and go through but it will be difficult.
“It is better at 1-1 than 0-0, so we cannot say it is a bad result, but obviously they are a very good team and it will be difficult at Stamford Bridge.” ai??i?? Mourinho added.
