Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho has rued his sideai??i??s ludicrous defending and lack of strikers after his side lost 3-1 to PSG in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
The 3-1 score line in the end somewhat flattered PSG, who certainly werenai??i??t at their best, but this now provides them with an important cushion heading into the second leg. Ezequiel Lavezzi scored the opener after John Terryai??i??s tame header reached him inside the box ai??i?? it was a terrific finish by the former Napoli forward, but Terry should have done better with his attempted clearance. Eden Hazard drew level for the London club from a penalty after Oscar was fouled inside the box.
Jose Mourinho would have been happy with the 1-1 score-line at half-time, but two dreadful mistakes at the back in the second half provided PSG with a big lead. The first of which arrived in the 61st minute of the match when David Luiz scored an own goal while defending a free kick. Then right at the end of the game substitute Javier Pastore doubled their lead after dancing through the Chelsea defence from the right and Petr Cech somehow missed his low shot at the near post. It was a bad mistake by the goalkeeper, and one which could prove to be the turning point in this tie.
Jose Mourinho was disappointed with the result and bemoaned his sideai??i??s ai???ridiculousai??i?? defending.
“I say ridiculous. You say sloppy, I say ridiculous.
“After the cross comes (for the first goal), we assist the striker and there’s no one going for the ball in the crucial position. In the second, it’s one of my players on the goal and that’s unlucky.
“But the way the team were positioned defensively was not correct. And finally, the third one is even more sloppy. Ridiculous.” ai??i?? The Chelsea manager said.
Mourinho, who started without a proper striker in this match and played Andre Schurrle as a false-nine, also rued the lack of depth and option upfront. He insisted that poor performances by his strikers, especially with Samuel Etoai??i??o out injured, forced him to try these tactics.
“I’m not happy with my strikers’ performances, so I have to try things.
“With Andre at least I know we have one more player to have the ball, we have one more player to associate with the other players.
“Football is also about scoring goals. That is for strikers, for real strikers. I had to try.” ai??i?? Mourinho explained.
The Portuguese mastermind replaced Schurrle with Fernando Torres in the second half and the former Liverpool striker failed to make his presence felt on the pitch. Mourinho explained this change in tactics insisting that he was hoping to get something more out of Torres upfront.
“I changed it because I thought that Fernando would give us more depth than Andre,” he said. “The team was comfortable with Andre, we had good control of the game and good ball possession. Andre was rocking back and the team was quite comfortable controlling the game.
“I thought Fernando would give us a bit more.” ai??i?? He said.
The Chelsea boss felt that despite the score-line his team can turn things around in the second leg, but accepted that it will be difficult for his side considering PSGai??i??s quality and their lack of goals.
“It’s a difficult job. It’s not impossible. Nothing is impossible but it’s difficult. They are the kind of team – with the players they have – out of nothing they can score goals. So it will not be an easy job.
“We are not a team full of talent to score lots of goals, especially at this level – but you never know.” ai??i?? Mourinho said after the game.
