As the curtain comes down on a glorious Chelsea career for Frank Lampard, The Hard Tackle pays a tribute to one of the best, if not the best, midfielders the Premier League era has seen.
Frank James Lampard had football running through his veins as soon as he was born. His father was a decorated footballer for West Ham United, winning the FA Cup twice with them and his uncle – Harry Redknapp – is a well known and well respected manager even to this day. It is only natural then that little Frank picked up a football from a very young age. As a result, when he was in his teens he joined the renowned West Ham Academy of Football and as he was to do throughout his career – succeed at whatever he does.
The Lampard journey to greatness started when he was all of 15 as he joined the Academy at West Ham in the year 1994 (more..). In 2 years, he was already being talked about as being one of the best young midfielders around. In the year 1995, he signed professional forms at West Ham and was immediately sent out on loan to Swansea for a season to gain experience. He then took a season to settle in at West Ham and by the 1997-98 season, was leading the Hammers to a record fifth place finish.
He then signed a contract extension in 1999 which would tie him to the club till 2005. An ever-present in the midfield, Frank Lampard’s stock as a midfielder began to rise. Two seasons later, in 2001, both his uncle and his father ended their association with West Ham FC prompting young Frank to think about his future. He resisted big money moves to Aston Villa and Leeds, opting to stay in London with a transfer to Chelsea for 11 million pounds.
Two seasons before Roman Abramovich came, Frank Lampard established himself as a regular among Chelsea stalwarts such as Dennis Wise, Marcel Desailly and Gianfranco Zola. Managing to score 15 goals in total in those two seasons, he was the few who survived the clear out as soon as the Russian billionaire arrived.
And what a decision it turned out to be. From the 2004-05 season, he managed to score a minimum of 20 goals in all competitions for five seasons running. A remarkable achievement considering very few strikers manage to reach that mark. He reached the peak of his footballing prowess in 2006, when he finished runner-up to Ronaldinho in both the FIFA World Player of Ai??The Year and the prestigious Ballon D’Or. A remarkable achievement for an Englishman, let alone a midfielder.
If we continue looking at the stats/records/ accolades that he has accrued throughout his career, this piece might go on page after page. We aren’t here to do that, though. This is a tribute to a fan favourite who was the epitome of professionalism throughout his time at The Bridge.
Perhaps the moment all Chelsea fans fell in love with Frank was in June 2008, when only a week after his mother passed away, he turned up to play for Chelsea against Liverpool in a Champions League semi-final and scored a crucial penalty under pressure to boot. The celebration involved him kissing the black armband the players were wearing that day and looking skyward – a sight enough to reduce most grown men to tears. By then, Lampard was at the peak of his playing career and that moment turned him into a legend in the eyes of the Blues faithful.
Whether it is was his passion, his temperament under pressure or his quick incisive runs into the box – he was always up for the big games. He also managed to garner something that very few players manage to do, praise from Sir Alex Ferguson. The Scot manager said, “Frank Lampard is an exceptional player ai??i?? a huge asset to Chelsea, You pay attention to players who can get goals from midfield and he’s been averaging 20 a season.You don’t see him getting into stupid tackles or making a habit of becoming involved in silly row.“
With over a 100 caps for England, Lampard joined an elite club of players. Scoring 29 goals in the process – should have been 30, if one counts the disallowed goal against Germany in the 2010 World Cup – his status at the international stage had also been established. The question of him and Gerrard playing together has always haunted England fans, perhaps the only chink in an otherwise strong armour.
Perhaps the most abused Chelsea player by the away fans – if one counts out JT – Lampard managed to put in performance after performance while copping the abuse on his shoulders. On the other hand, he is perhaps the most loved player by the Chelsea fans who chant his name at every game – whether he is present or not. And by all estimations, the trend is set to continue.
His present manager, Jose Mourinho, had this to say about him, “Lamps is Lamps. When he plays well he is best in the game, when he plays bad, he is the second or the third best.“
All said and done, Chelsea fans would want to thank Frank Lampard for giving them the pleasure of seeing him play. The fans are used to seeing players leave, but perhaps this departure will hurt them the most. A proper footballer, loyal servant of the club and a lovable man off the field, Lampard epitomizes everthing that is right about this beautiful game.
