Barcelona wingback Dani Alves has sparked transfer rumors by declaring he will leave the club at the end of this season to play in England.
The Brazilian international who has enjoyed six successful years at the Camp Nou has seemingly decided to accept a new challenge. “I am moving to England next year,” he told Brazilian daily O Globo. “I am going to play in the home of football. This will be my last year at Barcelona.” These comments suggest that his 13 year association with the Spanish league is coming to an end next season. He was reportedly pursued by Liverpool this summer but nothing came to fruition. However, now it seems that the move will finally happen although Manchester United are also weighing up a bid for the 31 year old Brazilian.
Liverpool currently have Glen Johnson and Javier Manquillo in that position but the Englishman remains under fire for a string of below par displays which was one of the reasons contributing to Liverpoolai??i??s failure to win the title last season. Although Liverpool owner John W.Henry had previously outlined the philosophy of the club not going for short-term fixes in the transfer market yet the similar nature of the playing style of Jonhson and Alves might be a factor in this move.
Similarly Manchester United would also fancy their chances here as they only have Rafael in the squad who can play as a right back. Alves is defensively suspect but he will provide the much needed experience in defence which is lacking in Louis Van Gaalai??i??s side.
Former Barca manager Pep Guardiola signed Dani Alves from Sevilla when he took over from Frank Rjikaard six years ago. He won five trophies in six years at Sevilla including two Uefa Cups and he continued his winning ways by clinching the Treble in his first season. He won the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup the following season as well. Alves has so far scored 20 goals in 303 games for the Blaugrana and provided 85 assists.
Inspite of his poor form, Dani Alves is still the best option for Barcelona in his position. He played a key role in Barcelonaai??i??s 6-0 win over Granada recently where his stunning volleyed assist helped Lionel Messiai??i??s 400th career goal. His understudy Douglas looked very nervous against Malaga and offered little going forward as well. Barcelona have so far not offered a new contract to Alves who has won 16 trophies at Barcelona and it looks like the Brazilian has made up his mind. Alves has largely stagnated at Barcelona and both Liverpool and Manchester United would represent smart destinations to thrive along with a new challenge.
