An inspired Chelsea performance saw the visitors bag all three points and demolish Schalke, 5-0. Chelsea opened the goal scoring tallies from the second minute itself, as a John Terry header found the Schalke net. An own goal by Kirchoff followed by a Willian, Drogba and Ramires goal, gave Chelsea an easy victory as they qualify for the latter stages of the Champions League. Chelsea’s manager Jose Mourinho was more than impressed with his sides clinical performance.
“I’m very pleased. It was a very impressive performance and the team are very confident. I said before the game that we were not interested in mathematics or just securing a point. We showed this from the first minute and had a chance right away. We were very compact, very solid in defenceAi??ai??i?? I don’t remember Thibaut Courtois making a save. We put in a fantastic performance.”
“Normally teams, when winning 3-0 or 4-0, they make defensive mistakes and allow the opposing team to score. Not today; the team was so solid. I think we should have scored even more. Obviously Schalke must be very sad with the result. The only comfort they can take is that they lost against a very good Chelsea team”
“I don’t remember Chelsea playing this way away from home. There were great victories for me, for Roberto [Di Matteo], with other managers, but not like this away from home. Very impressive. Schalke had their problems, but I think tonight any team playing us would have had a very difficult time.”
Chelsea have already qualified for the latter stages of the Champions League but Jose Mourinho is not counting his chicken before the eggs hatch.
“We take it match by match, step after step. We have qualified, we are top of the groupAi??ai??i?? that’s a good situation for us. The players are enjoying their game and that’s good. This team is as good if not better than other Chelsea teams. But right now, we have not won a single title. We have to transform the quality of our game into results and then winning something.”
Chelsea’s robust midfielder Cesc Fabregas agreed with the manager and explained that still these are early days in Europe’s finest competition, the Spanish International said “I don’t want to speak about [getting my hands on the UEFA Champions League trophy for the first time]. Let’s take it game by game and see what happens at the end. The most important thing is that we did our job today, getting first place in the group, so we can relax in the last game. We’ll still be competitive because we want to win it as well but obviously we can enjoy it knowing we are in the knockout round.”
