They say that the hallmark of any championship winning team is the ability to pull through and win ugly, even if you are not at your best. The past few fixtures in the month of December have certainly been that for Chelsea FC – scrappy performances, unconvincing displays and set piece goals conceded; but 3 points picked up nonetheless. They are 2 points off the leaders, hardly much cause for panic. But there is a distinct lack of cutting edge evident in a squad filled with attacking players. Only a matter of time before it all clicks, right?
Of the 9 games played in the busy December period, Chelsea have won 6, drawn away to Arsenal and have suffered losses away at Stoke and Sunderland thanks to last minute winners. While this is hardly vintage form, Chelsea have slowly and underwhelmingly been chipping away and picking up points. The latest victory at home to Liverpool was a better, more assured display, but certainly not one without a degree of fortune and required fortitude and grit, trademarks of every Mourinho side.
Jose Mourinho has time and again bemoaned the lack of killer instinct and cutting edge. Opposition are not being finished off, and a one goal lead is never secure. In fact, half of Chelseaai??i??s league victories have been by 1 goal margins, and Mourinho has attributed their 3 losses to the same problem.
One of the main problems for Chelsea has been the form of the strikers. A combined total of 6 goals from the three recognized strikers in the squad is woeful to say the least, and this puts pressure on the rest of the squad. Eden Hazard and Oscar have performed admirably thus far, combining to produce a total of 13 goals. Jose Mourinho has stated in the past that Chelsea would not be doing business in the January transfer window, but he might have to go back on those words, and it wouldnai??i??t be the first or last time either.
The start of the December period also witnessed an unprecedented streak of generosity in terms of goals conceded, including consecutive games with 3 goals conceded. However, Jose will look at it as a minor blip in what has been a fairly good defensive season thus far. John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and Petr Cech have started all 19 Premier League fixtures and Chelsea have conceded 19 goals, the 2nd best behind Everton and Arsenalai??i??s 18. However, a concerning statistic will be the number of set piece goals conceded, the highest percentage amongst all the EPL teams.

He has also perhaps for the first time in his managerial career, looked to stay at a club for a long term period, and has spoken about how he wishes to mould the team for the future.
However, the lack of in-form finishers and defensive cover has perhaps prompted a rethink, at least on a temporary basis, for the Special One. Mourinho has also reiterated that Manchester City are firm favourites, and that Chelseaai??i??s main focus would be to improve on their poor league performances in the past few seasons and close the gap at the top. Whether this is a realistic view or a statement to help ease increasing pressure, one can only wonder, but Mourinho is as ambitious as they come, and will be looking for nothing less than trophies and silverware.
While they remain within touching distance of the leaders and continue to pick up points, Mourinho will remain satisfied. However, the manner of victories and the lack of cutting edge will certainly leave the Portuguese exasperated. Is it just a matter of time before this squad comes together and plays to potential, or are these performances a sign of the overall lack of finishing ability and an indication of their quality?
The first half attacking display against Liverpool will certainly bode well for Chelsea and they would be hoping to replicate and improve on it come 2014.
