The nineteenth round of fixtures in the Barclays Premier League saw Arsenal FCAi??finish the year top of the table, as Chelsea FCAi??slammed the brakes on Liverpool FCai??i??s charge for the title, and the Manchester clubs recorded routine wins. We review the results of the last round of fixtures from 2013.
One-Nil to the Arsenal
There was a ring of nostalgia in the chants reverberating around the crisp, cold north east weather in Newcastle as Arsenal fans chorused the famous ai???One-nil to the Arsenalai??? line, after Olivier Giroud had won three points for the Gunners with a glancing header past Tim Krul. Arsenal were missing many of their regulars with Aaron Ramsey injured from the last game against West Ham and Mesut Ozil declared unfit before the game with a shoulder problem. With Thomas Vermaelen and Nacho Monreal also unfit, there werenai??i??t many defensive options to choose from for Arsene Wenger. Nevertheless, the Arsenal boss was hoping for his side to show some steel with a midfield comprising of Santi Cazorla, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere.
Newcastle had the better chances in a goal-less first half with Mathieu Debuchy going close twice to troubling the Arsenal goal. Cissokho also had a fine chance as his rasping shot was pushed over the bar by Arsenal ai???keeper Szczesny. Arsenal picked up in the second half as the game got more intense. Rosicky and Wilshere were doing well to keep possession in midfield and Tiote & Co. had to work their socks off to break up play. It was Tiote however, who gave away a free kick for a trip on Santi Cazorla that led to Arsenalai??i??s goal. From the resulting free kick taken by Theo Walcott, Giroud glanced the ball past Tim Krul and Wenger sighed in relief.
Newcastle then tried to get back in the game, playing with greater purpose and a higher tempo but Arsenalai??i??s defense kept them at bay. Per Mertesacker in particular did splendidly to keep the Arsenal defence organized. Hatem Ben Arfa troubled Arsenalai??i??s left side of defence towards the end with blistering runs but they had no end product to it and in the end Giroud turned out to be the match winner as Arsenal ground out a typical away performance to end the year on top with half the season gone.
Liverpool Slip out of Top Four as they lose to Chelsea; Everton Break into Top Four
Liverpool faced a tough away game at Stamford Bridge soon after their defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad. Brendan Rodgers went with a 4-3-3 formation with Daniel Agger at left back and Sakho partnering Martin Skrtel at centre half. It was Skrtel who gave Liverpool ahead in the fouth minute from a set piece that caused confusion in the Blues defence. Jose Mourinho has been critical of Chelseaai??i??s defending from set pieces quipping ai???Training dummies could score past themai???, and he saw no sign of improvement from his defence, as Luis Suarez was allowed to poke the ball in Skrtelai??i??s direction, who slammed the ball home from within the six yard box.
Chelsea responded well after being pegged back as Frank Lampard went close with a thundering drive that was tipped over the bar by Simon Mignolet for one of the saves of the season. As Lampard clutched his head in disbelief, Chelseaai??i??s confidence grew and they equalized in the 17th minute. It was fortuitous that the ball came off Sakho into the path of Eden Hazard on the edge of the penalty area but there was nothing fortuitous about the finish ai??i?? the Belgian curled a superb shot into the top corner past Mignolet, who could do nothing to keep it out. And a Chelsea striker scored in the 34th minute, a rarity, as Samuel Etoai??i??o, given the nod ahead of Fernando Torres to lead the attack, toe poked the ball inside the six yard box, Mignolet only able to deflect it into the net.
Chelsea led at half time but Liverpool pressed on in the second half and couldai??i??ve leveled it up ai??i?? Sakhoai??i??s looping header crashing against the post and Glen Johnson stinging drive pushed behind the post by Petr Cech. The defeat means Liverpool are now fifth in the table, just two points ahead of Manchester United and out of the Champions League spots, while Chelsea strengthened their claim to the title by keeping up with the leading pack.
One Merseyside clubai??i??s despair was anotherai??i??s joy, as Everton moved into the top four with a 2-1 win over Southampton. The excellent Seamus Coleman grabbed his fifth goal of the season, the right back sending a rising shot crashing into goal from an acute angle in the 9th minute. Substitute Gaston Ramirez equalized for the Saints with one of the goals of the season sending a dipping shot from 30 yards past Everton ai???keeper Joel, who shouldai??i??ve done better. However, it was the Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku, who gave Everton all three points with a crisp finish in the 74th minute off an aware pass from McCarthy.
Manchester Clubs Scrape Through
Manchester City and Manchester United both won 1-0 to stay on course at the close of the year. City hosted Crystal Palace at the Etihad and manager Manuel Pellegrini made six changes to the team owing to the rigors of the busy festive period. After a drab and disappointing first half, the action intensified after the hour mark as Pellegrini introduced Alvaro Negredo and Samir Nasri into the game. Joe Hart, who took a cut to the eye as he bravely defied Cameron Jerome by diving at the strikerai??i??s boot to smother the ball, made crucial saves from Mile JedinakAi?? and Joel Ward to keep City in the game.
The match winner for the Citizens came from their third choice striker Edin Dzeko, who tapped home a Jesus Navas cross from the right to give City all three points in the 66th minute. Dzeko was the match winner but it was Joe Hart who got the accolades for a stellar performance between the posts, making sure his side came through with all three points. It was an ugly win that champions churn out and City certainly did that on the back of a solid defensive display, from captain Vincent Kompany in particular.
Manchester United had a tricky trip to Carrow Road to face a Norwich sidein the lower half of the league table. United were without the talismanic Wayne Rooney who was injured and played Shinji Kagawa in the hole behind Javier Hernandez. Skipper Nemanja Vidic partnered Jonny Evans at the back as David Moyes hoped United would keep up their recent recovery in the league with a win.
Norwich began well, creating good chances in the first half, but were wasteful ai??i?? Wes Hoolahan the culprit of the most glaring miss of the day as he couldnai??i??t find the target from six yards out. United couldnai??i??t get out of the races in the first half and Moyes decided to send on Danny Welbeck in place of Ryan Giggs for the second half. Welbeck made good of a lucky break as the ball ricocheted off Javier Hernandez and fell into the path of Welbeck who coolly rounded the ai???keeper and slotted the ball home for the match winner. At the other end, David De Gea was responsible for fine saves to ensure United came through with an important win in their quest for a top four finish. United are now sixth in the table, steadily climbing the table and are now eight points off the leaders and three points off a Champions League spot.

West Ham United 3-3 West Bromwich Albion
Confidence on Sam Allardyce is growing thin in East London as West Ham United welcomed West Bromwich Albion for their last match of 2013. A win was needed for Allardyce to ensure that West Ham finished the year above the relegation zone. West Brom on the other hand were languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League and were hoping to put a spanner in the works for Big Sam.
